It all goes round in Fendertown.

Bust a deal, face the wheel!

Glad it all worked out -- let it be a teachable moment.

This is absolutely a great service the forum provides!

Is it time to put a (disputed?) list of tell-tale signs of a clear fake/remanufactured Strat being passed off as original? Add it to the forum FAQ or make it a sticky thread? It is harder to arbitrate claims of age/vintage without looking under the hood for dates or other clues...but from a glance there are some characteristics to check that seem to come up often enough.

(Open to the discussion of if this makes it easer or harder for people to generate better fakes? Better to warn unsuspecting buyers? Caution unaware sellers? ???)

For me, it is often difficult to memorize decal fonts or placements which for some is an easy clue, but I've grown accustomed to noticing a few items:

> Non-offset center screws on the trem cover
> Wide 12th fret markers
> Missing side fret markers
> Missing skunk stripe
> Missing walnut plug
> Tuners!
> All black rear body on sunburst finish
> Wrong/misplaced string trees
> All manner of serial number mismatches (this is where it gets funky)
> Gaps/Mis-alignment between body/bridge and pickguard

???

All valid parameters that should be checked.

I'd also add 22-fret necks on an alleged "re-issue" Strat, the appropriateness of the headstock shape on any given neck, the type of trem bridge installed, and the type and size of the routs beneath the pickguard. There are other specific clues I'm sure.

I'm surprised it had any legitimacy at all, Rob!

The S/N looked totally bogus to me. And mislocated on the headstock as well.

The decal was completely bogus but the faker might have copied the legit serial number from the Highway 1 Tele Rob found in the database. Or it could have been random numbers after the "Z5" part that by blind luck matched to a real Fender.
