Hi! I just got a new 2006 (a bit late, yes, probably one of the last first hand ones) American Strat (the one with the jewel on the headstock) and it weighs around 5.5lbs. Is this considered lightweight for a strat? it's my first electric so any input would be greatly appreciated!

I would say that at 5.5lbs your guitar is on the lite side. Average is 6 to 7lbs. Almost every Strat I own is right about that 6lbs mark, with one exception, my MIM 60's Classic weighs in at a 7.5lbs.

you guys are freaking me out with these weights! I'm am a weight fanatic and spend hours and hours researching weights of not only my own Strats, but new Strats I'm interested in owning - Here are some numbers from my own guitars:

Pre-CBS original '64 (now sold) - 7 pounds 6 ounces
Eric Johnson v.1 - 7 pounds 10 ounces
Custom Shop '65 - 7 pounds 8 ounces
'65 AVRI - 7 pounds 11 ounces
'65 AVRI - 7 pounds 6 ounces
'92 Floyd Rose Classic - 8 pounds

Most Custom Shop stuff I look at seems to run between 7 pounds 6 ounces and 7 pounds 12 ounces. The really high end Masterbuilts I've researched are a bit lower, maybe 7 pounds 2 ounces to 7 pounds 6 ounces and I've seen many mid to late 70s Strats going as high as 10 pounds!

But Strats in the 5 and 6 pound range!

I would consider those abnormally light.

I would consider between 7 and 8 lbs to be normal. At least that's what all mine are.

Most production line bodies are starting ~ 4.5 pounds right off the bat - add in hardware and guts and you're already well over 5 before you factor in the neck, tuners, and neckplate - so 5.5 seems almost impossible for a Strat. Maybe double check your weight with the scales at your local post office.

How do you test the weight ? Most ( if not all ) personnal weight scale may have one to few pound error.

+1

Few scales are calibrated to read accurately below 10 lbs unless they're designed for determining postal rates, medical marijuana prescriptions, and the like.

...And if you don't bring them to the companies for a new calibration after one or few year of use , they may/ are reading false.

Perhaps you all are right... it still feels SUPER lightweight compared to other strats ive held before so i'll guess its still in the lower weight range. Does the weight affect the quality of the guitar in any way?
