Hello there fellow guitarists.

I would like to ask you all for some help.

I own a 2 year old Amercian Special HSS and today I decided to clean and restring it. After finishing with the body and the fingerboard I noticed some strange "residue" on the pickups (pictures below). I tried to scrape some off with my fingernails and it feels a little bit like nailpolish... ofcourse it can't be nailpolish because I didnt do anything with the pickups since I bought it. I did have it set up at the guy who basically treats most of the guitars in my country so I doubt he did anything strange with it either (plus I've been going to the guy for the past 10 years...).

So I wonder if anyone knows what this could be and most of all I'd ask for any advices on how to properly get it off. I havent noticed any lack of tone from the pickups so I dont think it's effecting them but still it does bother me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's possibly just the wax that the pickups were dipped in when they were being made.

Did you remove the protective film from the pickup covers when it was new?

Did Fender dipped the pickups ?

Or it is varnish ?

Anyway , remove that if you want .

I've picked a lot of lacquer off the tops of pole pieces.
It'll flick off easily. Just don't use something that could scratch them.
