So I have recently picked up a 1986 Fender Contemporary Stratocaster, and have started the much needed refurbishing process. The body has some chipping going on that needs to be addressed, and that brings me here. I have not found anywhere what kind of finish was sprayed on the contemporary series from japan. I am thinking it is a polyurethane finish just due to the time period but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure what type of finish was used. For reference it is the single humbucker model, in candy apple red (the only one I have seen in this colour) with the all black neck (headstock and back of the neck).

I have a '86 Contemporary strat, that is nitrocellulose paint in white. The model deluxe body - the one with microtilt. But I like the little piches on the paint... it shows it's age wonderfully. And sounds the same!

If it's not a Deluxe or Special series, my guess is poly.
But test it in a non-visible place like inside the neck pocket. (Nitro will turn tacky with alcohol in a few minutes, and dissolves in acetone. Poly holds against both. Use a Q-tip with just a drop of solvent.)

That one humbucker would make it a model 27-4400..? Pics, please

Guitarmikey- its not healthy relic type wear, it's like chipping/flaking that I would rather not have happen. I bought it like that and would enjoy it staying together as long as possible, don't get me wrong I like wear, but I would rather put the miles on a guitar.

jmattis- I am not sure of the serial off hand and will get some pictures soon.

Ok, so I tried the alcohol trick, and the acetone. The alcohol did nothing, but the acetone seems to rub just little bit of red onto the q-tip, taking just a bit of gloss away from the finish. The results were not night and day, so does that mean it's poly or does the smudge of red means it's nitro?

I've been researching my '88 MIJ Strat for some years now. It is what's known as a Contemporary 22.
Anyway, my point is, one of the color options was Candy Apple Red.
Mine is white, but it's most certainly a Poly finish.

Hope this helps.
Goodonya ...Mark.
