Bought this the other day second hand. Guy said it was a 2000 or 2001 American Special Edition. I can't find any serial numbers but I think they are under the neck. Without taking the neck off any other way to identify the model and if it is indeed American?

It works great and is in great shape. Any idea what it might be worth?

I just had it to a local guy and he said the neck is definitely an American Strat Neck but the body is definitely not. Any comments? If I want to get rid of the guitar would I be better off selling the neck separately?

G'day con. That's not a Fender body mate. At best it could be a Squier. The middle screws on the backplate are the main giveaway. They should be off-set.
I you're lucky it may have some Fender parts, but it could be a complete fake.
Other, more knowledgeable folks here may be able to tell you more.

Goodonya ...Mark.

It's not what the decal on the headstock suggests it might be.
The tuners are a giveaway.
The same goes for the mess of a hole for truss rod adjustment.
The tremolo back plate screw alignment is wrong (as has already been pointed out).

The neck plate might be the only genuine part on it

Con, the thing is, if you sell it on with that decal, you become part of the problem.
If it's a Squier Affinity (we don't really know) well, they go for a hundred bucks used.
To get your couple of hundred, you'd have to deceive the buyer, otherwise they're better off with an original Squier.
Some here would say that it should be burnt. Maybe the decal could be removed. I value it at $50. Sorry the news is not better. Happy new year mate.

Goodonya ...Mark.

If it works well, as you said, why not use it? If nothing else as a guitar to use when drunk or for visitors or kids to handle, or otherwise when you don't want to risk an expensive guitar.
It's not like it suddenly starts playing worse just because it's been IDs as not legit.

Mate, you've edited your original post. You now say your local guy claims the neck is definitely US made. Really? I wasn't sure about the neck, but as Stratmangler pointed out, those tuners and truss rod hole are dodgy... and where's the serial number?

Yeah I edited it because after my original post I brought it to my local music store. I have no idea if the neck is real or not. Guy at the music store recommended I ditch the body and sell the neck separately. I really have no idea.

The small-diameter fret markers are incorrect for any Fender neck and the dot spacing at the 12th fret is a dead giveaway that hallmarks it as a complete and utter fake.

You have been hustled.

Any chance of contacting the seller?
I know what I'd like to do with it.

The wide spacing of the 12th fret position markers also marks it out as not a US Fender and there's no Made in Japan marking on it. Just another item on the list of glaringly bad fake identifiers!

That is probably a Squier Standard or Affinity neck. Measure the neck width at the nut, if it's less than 42mm, it's a Squier.

Yeah I contacted the seller and he now claims he purchased it second hand and was told then it was American when he bought it. Of course he refused to give me my $ back. I think I will take him to small claims court. Some people are a#%holes out scamming people at Xmas time for some $.

Sucks!
