Local pawn shop is selling this guitar claiming it is a 2003 blacktop HSH, which it obviously isn't since no such thing existed and it's an HSS. Serial no. is an American made 2003, and it is stamped made in USA

Do you think it is an American Standard or a Highway 1?

Well it's definitely neither a Blacktop or an HSH Strat of any kind. Nor is it a Highway1. It would appear that this is an American Series HSS Stratocaster.

I located a photo of one of these in the 2004 Fender Frontline (pg62). It is American Series Stratocaster HSS. It comes with 1 Diamondback HB and 2 Tex-Mex single coil.

Everything about that Strat says American Series to me. Very nice looking guitar too, I should really get myself a Strat that suits a black pickguard.

It's an American Strat HSS from the first year of production.

This guitar was the first to sport the S1 switching system.

When Fender rejuvenated the American Standards in 2008, the S1 switch has been removed.

Yeah, the S1 on the Strat, while giving a lot of extra sounds, was not intuitive, and you would need a chart in front of you to know what each position was - it seldom matched what the selector with the S1 disabled did. K.I.S.S. meant it had to go.

The Tele S1s have a much more sensible configuration that for the most part matches the non-S1 settings. It's actually usable - I find myself using it especially with fuzz pedals, for better tracking, but also to get some twang out of a humbucker.

Oh yeah, it was a real toughie.

Five of the positions are the standard Strat configurations that most of us have been using for decades. There were were only five new pre-sets to learn -- to some ignorant slacker with a GED who's mastered the intricacies of an X-box or an iPad, it oughta be child's play.

Thanks all for confirming what DS and I thought. So in good condition, what would you pay for it?

I don't care for that color, but it is worth about $650.

+1

Around $650, tops. Seven bills if a HSC is included.

Every time I think of "British" and "racing" I remember the scene in "Vanishing Point" where that sap in the XKE goes into the drink after mixing it up with Kowalski in his 440 Six-Pack Challenger R/T.

Since they had no idea what they were selling, I was able to pick it up with Fender HSC for $400.
