I am about to setup my 2010 American Strat Deluxe with the 2 point tremelo system-I have setup my guitar many times before but never the tremelo--I always start by checking the neck, then string height and lastly the intonation. Do I follow this order and end on setting the tremelo? Or is there a more pragmatic order?

Thanks for any tips!

Fender suggest to start with the tremolo.
The recommended setup process is here.

I own John Carruther's book: Teach yourself Guitar Repair & Maintenance--in this book he discusses the setup of a Floyd Rose trem--not a a 2 point Fender trem--nonetheless, he adjusts the neck first, then the bridgeplate/trem, then the string height, and lastly the intonation...

Can anyone here confirm that Fender's instructions are the most spot on for this order of this process? Or is Carruther's the better approach? My goal is to setup my guitar so that I have the most flexible trem use available without any tuning issues.

I would adjust tremolo first to have the proper strings tension on the neck , after I check the neck , truss rod and re check tremolo.

You will never get the action set right unless you set the neck relief FIRST by adjusting the truss rod. Absolutely never.

We talk here about setting neck before or after temolo .

Action come in third IMO.

Neck OK and tremolo wrong = wrong action

Thanks stratele52, that's what I assumed the correct order would be. Have you done this setup yourself?

Hi GilgaFrank, thanks for your reply--do you set your trem before or after your neck? I was not sure by your response if when you wrote action you meant trem/bridgeplate?

Nice!--I want to get to that point as well, but I need more knowledge. I have been teaching myself and reading a lot online--can you recommend a good book for learning?

a few diff perspectives posted. Personally, would adjust the neck relief first. Then bridge adjustments.

Heres a video on how Paul from the custom shop sets them up. He explains all the steps in the order he does them.

Here's a video on how a master builder from Fender custom shop sets up a floating bridge on a two point tremolo.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the vids! Yes, it cleared up the neck question for me, however, I am still a little confused. Last night I setup my Strat: neck, then trem, then string height, then intonation. When I finished I realized my tremelo was no longer set where I initially had it. Oops...so should trem settings come after string height and intonation?

" Oops...so should trem settings come after string height and intonation? "

You do string height and intonation at the end . The last of the last is intonation.
Take your time , look and know how to do before . You will learn ,it is not a rocket science .

I did not check the video but IMO they must show how to set up in good order , just follow.

Did you need to adjust neck truss rod ?

If yes , this could need many fine tuneing and could take few hours to one day. If you do in one shot , neck shalt not stabilized and will continue to move

That's about all you have to remember.
