Well, aside from becoming Steve Vai, you'd need at least an HSS Strat. You may want to look at the DiMarzio Evolution or Gravity Storm humbuckers for the bridge position. Then there's the amps..............Also; it is an understatement to say that Steve uses that Floyd Rose ALOT so I would consider it to be part of his sound. You could get a Floyd installed or maybe the Super Vee might be a "Vai"able alternative.

He has a signature amp that he uses. Carvin V3 Legacy. It 's a three channel amp they designed with him. I'm sure having it would help to get his sound.

I believe that he is actually still using the Legacy 1. Possibly briefly tried the L3, but went back to the L1 and sometimes uses the L3 as a prop.

Prior to the Carvin endorsement Steve used Bogner amps, and more particularly the XTC Ecstasy.

Some of his songs may require a 7-string guitar.

Prior to that, when playing with Frank Zappa, he used Carvin X100B.

Depends which Vai sound you are after. Set the trem floating. I find Fender pickups lack sustain for something like for the love of God, Try a compressor or up the reverb. High gain helps plus delay. Roll back the tone a touch too to thicken up the drive.

Get a Strat with an HSH pickup configuration and upgrade the stock pickups with an Evolution pickup set.

For the 7-string repertoire I strongly recommend a Squier Showmaster with DiMarzio Blazes.

Steve uses Edge Lo-Pro locking trems.

Also please bear in mind that some of his guitars are equipped with a Fernandes Sustainer humbucking pickup in the neck position.

In addition to Bogners and Carvins Steve used Soldanos and Marshalls during the Sex and Religion tour in 1993.

I seem to have no problem finding Via Zen on this American Deluxe with a Floyd Rose I installed. I think a humbucker and a locking tremolo are the key factors of Via.

The photo doesn't reflect the changes you made in your American Standard/Special hybrid.
