I am saving and researching for a 62 AVRI strat. used of course. Other than the difference in the neck radius between the AVRI and the Hot Rod are there any other tell tale items that can be seen that can help distinguish the 2 models?

Thanks

Besides the radius the neck on the Hot Rod '62 is also thicker in depth than the "regular" AV '62, and the middle pickup is reverse-wound so it will be noise-cancelling in positions 2 and 4. The other difference is color - if the color is anything other than sunburst, vintage white, or Sherwood green it will be an AV '62.

Sherwood green has an interesting history - it was available on the AV '62 in 1998-1999 (and maybe partway into 2000), then it was discontinued. It was revived on Hot Rot '62 when it came out, but was dropped from the Hot Rod after 2009. In both cases this color is more of an emerald green than the true Sherwood green like they used in the Custom Shop and are using on the current AV '59 Strat.

John C...Thanks for the info. I am showing my age here 62 was my birth year and I know I can't ever afford a real 62 so the 62 AVRI has been my goal. I have been fortunate enough to play a couple in shops when I have been on vacation and really enjoy the feel and tone. My personal favorites in colors are the Shoreline gold, Inca Silver and Ocean Turquoise.

Thanks again

Mike

Both guitars are very fine instruments -- I don't think either will disappoint.

+1 on Ocean Turquoise Metallic.

Mike - I was also born in '62 so I hear you. Unless I hit the Powerball or MegaMillions I don't think I'm going to get a "real" 1962 guitar - even oddball and low-end Guilds, Grestches, Gibsons and Fenders from the early 60s are getting out of reach so the reissue is the best alternative if you want a guitar with 1962 specs.

I was born on the same year, and guess what? Just had the chance to find a FSR AVRI '62 while touring Canada so I took it in a wink! Tropical Turqoise, great colour. But the best is the sound that gets out of that guitar. And taking it overseas (I live in Europe), really had a great deal for, it was the last model in the shop. More than happy! Wish you will find something as well, it really deserves everything.

guitarmikey...was that the 2012 limited edition FSR? If so I definitely agree they like all of the reissues are great sounding guitars. I really liked that color too, I saw one locally in early 2013 but did not have the money to grab it then.
My search continues but I know I will eventually find one I just have to make sure I keep looking and keep put aside some cash for when I do find the right one.

Congrats on your.

Hi guys,

I also was born in 1962 and am looking at some of the used 62 AVRI's on eBay since the cost for an original seems to be in the $25K and up range. Ouch!!! Not in my lifetime unless I win the lottery or something... But, I thought it would be cool to have a guitar tied to that year.

For those of you that own the '62 reissue what's your take on the pickups? When I eventually nab one I'm thinking of putting D Allen Tru '62 pickups in it...

Hi mmarchi21,

Welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't change the pups in a '62 RI or '62 HR. When used with a good tube amp played clean or mildly driven, they are the sweetest sounding pups, great chimey tones, great harmonics, just an absolutely wonderful sound. I owned a '62 RI, couldn't get along with the radius and fret size but loved the sound, so I got the '62 HR, and will not change a thing about it....... other than adding strap lock buttons. 8)

I wouldn't even think of changing the pickups I'm my 62 HR, they sound wonderful into a nice tube amp. I've been down the "change th stock pickups" road a few times with my other Strats and always ended up back with a good set of Fender pickups. 57/62's or Fat 50's or the like, hard to get a better sound to my ears.

If you could find a refinished '62, it could be affordable. Just be sure the pickups are original.
