Hi Guys,

I'm new to the Fender forums, however have always been a very die hard Fender player.
I just recently purchased my very first brand new American Standard Strat. (purchased on 12/17/13, so I've had it a little more than one week)

When I got the guitar, I wasn't a big fan of the 9's that came stock, so I had the shop put on 11's. They did the setup quick and handed me the guitar within 25 minutes.

I got it home and was ecstatic to play my new strat, and it' does in fact play like a dream.

However, today, I noticed there is a crack forming underneath the nut. I am worried that this could turn into something much bigger. I know the guitar is under warranty and I could take it back to the shop, however I don't know if you guys have had any experience with this.

The attached picture gives a little bit of an idea of what I am seeing. Should I be contacting the store of purchase or should I contact Fender for direct repair?

Image

Thanks,
David

I don't see the wood cracking,. it looks like there might be a tiny crack in the nut, It's easy to replace a nut, It doesn't look like there is anything to be alarmed about just by looking at the pics you posted

I have had heavy strings break my guitars neck bolts off in the neck, had to carefully drill the broken bolts out of the neck, ever since then I won't use anything heavier than a .46 on the low E and a .10 on the high end,. My experience with the heavy strings may have been a freak occurence, but never again will I try them unless I leave the guitar tuned to C# seems that the heavier strings have too much tension, and it just makes me nervous since I had heavy strings snap my neck bolts once, but again I don't see the cracks you are speaking of in your pics. just keep your eyes on it and if it gets worse take it back and see what they can do for you

Thanks guys.
I'm going to keep an eye on it, though I'm thinking it could be related to the extra tension from the upsize in strings. I've never had any problems on any of other of my 7 guitars doing this...

Here's a little better picture for reference.

Also - I have kept the guitar in a 40-50% humidity range since bringing it back from the store.

It just aggravates me, having spent over $1k on this new guitar, and seeing this pop up. ugh.

I don't have cracks in any other guitars. Dings yes, but to me, cracks are a whole new level.

Either should be fine. It is just a cracked nut. Should take either a fender repair shop or the place you bought it from no time to replace it.

Thanks,

Do you think I'm still safe to run these 11's after the repair? I'm trying to determine if its a faulty nut or a string tension issue.

The nut slots may need to be widened slightly if you're going to continue to use 11's. But, if your fingers can handle the 11's, the nut should have no problem. That nut would probably be fine for years to come, but no reason not to get it taken care of now while it's under warranty.

I'll be taking it into the shop I bought it from tomorrow. Like you said, if it's under warranty, no reason to not get it fixed. I prefer to play 11s, so I'll make sure they get the correct nut in there for it..
Thanks!!

Glad to be here on the forum :)

Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Two of my toys. The amp was my dads, 1968 Super Reverb. Still in pristine condition, I play it on a daily basis. Original Speakers!

Great looking rig!

My first new Fender amp was a '67 silverface Super Reverb just like your dad's.

I don't see any crack, just the finish flaked off, maybe due to the nut moving a little in the slot. I wouldn't worry about it, and I doubt that they will refinish the end of the nut.

Well, I just took it in and they said they'll fix it all up for me and make sure the nut is set up for the heavier gauge string this time.
Hopefully whatever it is will be fixed
No charge, so I can't complain.
