Hi, I've got a 2010 American Strat HSS Deluxe with an LSR nut--to my ears the e,b, and g strings have a metallic sound when played open and I am pretty confident the LSR nut is the culprit as the guitar is otherwise well set up and maintained. This thin, metallic-like sound is most apparent when using the neck pickup and playing open strings. Has anyone else experienced this? Is metal on metal a good idea for a nut/string relationship? Would switching to tusq or bone be more musical? I imagine Fender uses the LSR system to offset any tuning/tremelo bar issues, but can I do better than LSR?

Thanks!

No.
I have had a few guitars equipped with the LSR nut and still own one now. I hear no difference in tone that could be attributed to the nut. If there is a difference it will be even less significant than the affect of fingerboard wood on tone. There have been members here who had other issues with the LSR nut but tone is not typically one of them. Complaints relating the LSR nut most often pertain to the balls themselves deforming (going out of round) under string pressure but that complaint is not unilateral by any means. My number one guitar has the LSR. It is strung with 10s at standard pitch and it gets played more than all my other guitars put together and there are no signs of anything amiss with the balls. There is also no deviation in tone from any other Strat aside from the usual things; pickups, amp choice, playing style, etc.

You may want to consider that the three strings you are referring to are all unwound, assuming you're not using a wound G. Perhaps that is what you are hearing.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Perhaps it's a string alignment issue? do those strings appear to be rubbing up against antrhing they shouldn't be. If that seems to be O.K. perhaps... the nut need to be cleaned? Could be there's dirt, lint, dust buildup in there.... Try cleaning the nut.

I have the same guitar as you I believe. I feel my hgh E above the 9th fret is very thin sounding, especially on the neck pup. I'm planning on playing around with pup heights but haven't gotten around to it. I doubt that the LSR is causing it. I really like the LSR because my Strat holds it's tune so well. I'll let you know if I solve it with changing the pup height.

I'd be more inclined to check that the tuner bushings need tightening.

No problems with my LSR.

+1 on checking the tuner bushings to be sure they are tight. It is quite common for them to be loose on new guitars.
