Hi

Image

The second time it happens that I find the Fender guitar and could not tell what model it is. guy wrote in the announcement that guitar has TEX MEX pickups and standard in American Special are mounted Texas Special single-coil pickups. Paint on the body is glassy, so it is also not Highway One. So what's the model? O.o

Thanks for any answers

I also agree - most likely an American Special. I can't read the tiny photo with the serial number on it - it looks like a "Z9xxxxxx" when I zoom in but it becomes too pixilated to really see. That being said the first runs of American Specials had "Z9xxxxxx" serials even though they weren't announced until the January 2010 NAMM show - since Fender didn't necessarily change over headstock decals on January 2 plus it's also likely that they did a couple of production runs in late 2009 so the could immediately fill orders taken at the show.

Owner said to me that this guitar has Tex Mex pickups and that is why it couldn't be a Fender American Special In my opinion

I should have waited until I could see larger photos to post; now I spot a few red flags.

#1 - this has a 2008 serial number; that puts this neck as being from a Highway 1. As I mentioned before the American Specials are a 2010 model but the very earliest ones will carry a "Z9xxxxxx" (i.e. 2009) serial number due to Fender's production methods.

#2 - the "Fender Corona California" neck plate. American Specials (and the Highway 1s before them) have blank neck plates. Fender uses that style "Fender Corona California" neck plate without the hole for the micro-tilt device on American Standard basses.

I'm thinking this might be an assembly - loaded body from an American Special, neck from a Highway 1, and an aftermarket neck plate.

Email Fender's Consumer Relations with the serial number; I'm not sure what their holiday schedule might be but hopefully you would get a response this week. They are at consumerrelations@fender.com.

On my 2010 Fender Catalog , American Special peg head use 2 string T , Hyghway 1 only one.

Your neck is like an American Special.

Look at the serial number of the OP's guitar - the American Special didn't come out until January 2010 and this is a 2008 serial number. Of course you would have to verify this neck's date from the stamp, but this neck should be from 2008 or maybe early 2009. An American Special would not have a Z8xxxxxx number like the OP's guitar, but it could have a Z9xxxxxx number (the first batches), a "10xxxxxxx" number, or a "US10xxxxxx" number if it was from the first year of 2010.

The American Special neck and the Highway 1 neck are cosmetically identical - including having 2 string trees.

Ther are no American Special . Just Highway 1 and deluxe MIM guitar with this peg head.

Both Highway 1 (pre and post-2006) and American Special Stratocasters have dual easygliding string guides.

There's no Tex-Mex for the American Special. This guitar sports Texas Special single-coil pickups (HSS: Fender DH-1 Humbucker with black bobbins in the bridge) while the Highway 1 uses AlNiCO 3 single-coils.

Yep - that's all kind of my point. Plus how do you explain the American Standard P-bass/Jazz Bass neck plate?

I still think it's a parts guitar of a 2008-ish Highway 1 neck, American Special loaded body, and an aftermarket neck plate as found on an American Standard bass.
