Hi all,

At the ripe age of 45, I decided to learn how to play electric guitar. I'm in the process of buying my first instrument. I have my eye on a Fender FSR Standard Stratocaster. I read somewhere that as a newbie one should stay away from guitars with floating tremolos. Does the FSR have a floating tremolo?

Thanks!

That's a myth. Some do and some don't. It's better to have and not need than to need and not have. Get it and store it until you feel the urge to experiment with it.

Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by "store it"? I assume you mean taking it off. How does that affect the ability to tune the guitar?

As Miami Mike stated, the whole business about staying away from a guitar with a floating vibrato is a myth....pure nonsense. You can adjust the tremolo to suit your taste and playing style so that if bought a Strat that was set up with a floating trem, you could easily adjust it so that it lays flat, or even how to what degree it floats. I'm not sure what he meant by storing it, but you could certainly feel free to make any adjustments to your liking. If you don't feel comfortable doing the adjustments yourself (and it's really super easy) you can have someone do it for you.

Howdy, what Mike stated is correct... beginning guit-fiddlers staying away from a floated trem... is indeed... a myth.
It comes down to personal preference. Some folks like the feel of a decked trem. Some like to float it. What's most important is that YOU like how the guitar plays and sounds.
Make sure it has a proper setup whether the bridge has a float or is decked.
Go for it... get the FSR if you want it... Enjoy it and have fun learning how to play your new guitar ;)

By "store it" I meant keep it (the bar - aka the kickstand) in your case compartment until you feel you'd like to try it out.

You may find yourself several years down the road hearing something and thinking that you'd like to try that with the trem bar.

As long as the term is setup correctly with about an eighth of an inch space between body and bridge, two outside screws cranked down on vintage bridge, the rest about a sixteenth up, and most importantly string tension equal to spring tension, then all will be right with the world. The biggest complaint and why most people deck their terms is improper setup that causes the strings to not stay in tune upon useage. When done right (and Fender has been making floating terms for a long time now) they are an added feature. Why settle for less? Of course it can be a preference thing, but then why not buy a fixed bridge instead?
