Hi,

I own a 2010 Fender American Deluxe HSS. The tone is just too dark. I have the N3 pickups on the neck and middle positions. I've seen hundreds of videos of people showing off the bright and snappy tone on the neck and in-between neck and middle positions on their Stratocaster. Some people say 500k volume pot would make the guitar brighter. I wonder if that were true. Some people also say that DiMarzio area pickups have more highs and less magnetic pull (which means I can have them closer to the strings). Please give me your opinion.

BTW, I'm not open to noisy single coil pickups.

I have a '10 Am Dlx HSS. I can get any tone I want out of it. I admit, when using the S1 switch it gets dark. I don't like overly bright guitars, so maybe my preferences are different than yours. But, I really think that with the right amp settings and adjusting your tone pots that you should be able to pull some very nice tone out of the N3's. I've kind of rediscovered this Strat the last couple of months. I didn't use it much for a long time but I now take it to all of the open mic nights I go to and I used it to do a show of Beatle tunes recently with my Vox amp. Remember since you don't like noise, the N3's are like dead quiet, so you'll be giving that up if you switch.

Hi asura1234,

You might want to try lowering the bass side of your Pups, and/or raising the treble side. You can usually find a happy medium to balance the tone, but don't get the pups too close to the strings so as to allow the magnet pull to interfere with the string vibration.

Asura, its evenly dark across all positions? Is there a coil tap on the humbucker? If so, is the single in the bridge dark, also?
N3's, I dont dig 'em. I'm no purist or snob, I love my SCNs. N3s sound like Dan Fogelberg's voice when he was real sick- top and bottom, but no middle. An American Strat seems like too dear a guitar to have to do surgery on after purchasing it. I owned an american Tele with N3s. Returned it to GC before the 30 days were up. It only had girth in the middle spot and only if the S1 was engaged. Too bad. It was beautiful.
