And your dealer was almost correct because 1984 was the Dan Smith era when Fender scaled back US production, retooled and took a good long hard look at how they were building guitars before emerging with some absolute classics that brought them to where they are today.

I'd definitely give StewMac and Erlewine a call. Vintage Guitar mag publishes a slew of articles on the repairs these guys do. Email
dan@stewmac.com and describe your situation. :idea:

The higher-end Gold Elite featured gold hardware and the top-of-the-line Walnut Elite sported a solid walnut body and an ebony fingerboard, which is an uncommon fretboard material for a guitar or bass from that era as Fender didn't officially pick ebony until the early 1990s.

After the Fullerton plant closed its doors in 1984 Fender Japan did a 22-fret version with a modern "C"-shaped maple neck and 9.5'' radius which lasted until 1986.

Also has 3 push button pickup selectors and active MDX TBX electronics.

Not all Elite Strats came with the 3 push-push switches. Some were shipped with the standard 5-way selector and regular Stratocaster knobs.

Two of such guitars which were custom-built for Eric Clapton were fitted with a 50's-style maple neck; Eric said he was messing around them.

I never seen a elite series Strat with out push buttons , TBX MDX. Must be rare dog with a switch or maybe just custom built. I have some catalogs I dig them out of office closet. No switch mentioned though in owners manuel thats available on the net either.
Page 4 says ( The Fender Elite Series guitars are equipped with specially designed active circuitry ect. }

I have seen a few of these all with active circuitry so it peeked my curiosity.

The 5-way switch and the regular Strat knobs were added upon Clapton's own request, Eric disliked the push-push pickup switches and serrated-rubber knobs.

Only the black Elite Strat retained those features.
