I am about to pull the trigger on this guitar. Looks absolutely beautiful. The price at GC seems great. Does anyone in the forum own one? Can you tell me what to expect and should I buy it over a new MIM that a friend will let me have for $200? :? Is the difference in sound enough to justify the jump in price? Please forgive my ignorance, just learning as I go. Someday I will pass for an aspiring musician and be able to answer these trivial questions
Thanks!!

If you're talking about the honeyburst one, then yes it is an awesome guitar. I have had mine for approximately a year now.
The finish is something you might not be into though, as I have only had it a year and it has collected considerable scratches and the laquer is already wearing off where my arm sits. I personally don't mind these things, but if you like it for the vanity I would suggest getting some wax or something for it to ward off scratches. The only other downside is the tuning stability. I use the whammy bar constantly (ala Jeff Beck or Hendrix) and so I replaced the stock tuners with Schaller staggered locking tuners and removed the string trees. With a little nut sauce the thing doesn't go out of tune. If you aren't as much of a fan of the tremolo you can ignore this entire part.

The tone of the guitar is great for my needs. This is one of the last guitar lines you will see with the American Standard pups since they needed to clear inventory because the new Standards have Fat 50s. I can get pretty much any tone I want, and since I play in a band that does mostly humbucker-y things, the ability to have a tone control for the bridge is awesome.

And the price is right, It's like $799 now, right? I got mine the weekend it came out when it was only $670, but $799 is still totally worth it.

However, The MIM comparison really depends on what model MIM it is.

Taking a shot in the dark, I would say to go for the $200 MIM from your friend, especially if it's in good condition. A satin finish is beautiful. I have one that was made a few years ago, but as mentioned above, the finish is very delicate and will show rub marks rather easily. Mine sits unused in my collection for that reason.

It's really a subjective thing & you need to play the two guitars to be able to make an objective decision between the two.

Having not seen either one, I'd say $200 for an MIM in good shape is a pretty good deal. I'd buy one if made available to me for that price, even if I'm not looking to buy.

Still, if you're in a position to buy an American made guitar, do it. If not, you're just going to be "what if" ing yourself to death until you do. For whatever reason, the American made guitars possess a certain value over the MIMs & always will. Nothing at all wrong with an MIM guitar. Fender calls them the Standard. But the American Standard (even the special) is a step up.

TheMaxwell, you have the same guitar, I think I can still get my guy to drop it to $670 if I wanted to buy it. You hit the nail on the head. I thought the finish would not be durable.

The real reason to buy another strat is that my MIM is an HSS configuration. Thinking I should add an SSS Strat. If I can get an American Standard used in great shape for less than $650 I will do it, oherwise the MIM is looking good. TVR1979, I think I agree with you, it would sit unused looking pretty and last I checked, Fenders are meant to be played!! Thanks for your help! I will pass on the Nitro, look for an American Strat pre loved and if not, welcome home MIM!!

I play the honeyburst Strat every time I go to Guitar Center. Such a nice sounding and gorgeous looking guitar. I wouldn't worry about the durability of the finish; like you said, Fenders are definitely meant to be played.

Like others have mentioned, $200 for a MIM Standard is a great deal, especially if it's in good condition. If you don't mind having a guitar not made in the USA, you can use your leftover funds and modify the snot out of it. It's not too difficult to turn them into great guitars.

However, if you just want the easier American route, it shouldn't take a lot of effort to find a used, good condition American Standard Strat for around $700.

Whatever you choose, you get a Strat. That's never bad. :)
