86-87 Japanese? Not quite right but it is the only F SN I noted anywhere.

The only Fenders to have an 'F' prefix to the serial# are Japanese models produced in '86/'87. The problem is, these guitars have the F prefix followed by 6 numbers, not 7 as in your example.

The USA-made Fenders from late '65 to '76 (called the F series) had the stylized 'F' on the neckplate, but this isn't part of the actual serial # which was a 6-digit number stamped on the top of the neckplate.

There were also some USA Fenders made for export with the prefix FN followed by 6 digits.

USA-made, Japanese and Korean Fenders have only used a 6-digit number after the prefix.

Mexican-made Fenders have both 7 and 8 digits after the prefix, so that's what you're likely looking at.

That said, my FSR Am. Vtg. Ltd. Ed. '57 Stratocaster has the SN# LE02639. The prefix LE (for Limited Edition) appears nowhere in any literature I've seen, nor does a 4-digit number (except for the '54-'56 guitars).

So, anything is possible.

Contact Fender Consumer Relations: consumerrelations@fender.com They may be able to assist you.

cheers!

Hey, thank you all for your responses. Very helpful.

I had originally thought it was an '86 Mexican model as that's what the SN was closest to!

I have emailed the customer relations at Fender, hoping they can help me out.

Thanks again guys,

Corey

Is it possible that it is an E, and part has come off making it look like an F? If so E9 could be a legit serial number prefix for few different models. If an F followed by 7 digits, I would say that the F stands for fake.

Where is the serial number located? Front of headstock? Back of headstock? Back bottom of neck?

As mentioned, pics would help.
