The top picture is just added on monday 2 june it clearly shows the pickup arrangement.
From the 2007 Crossroads Concert: Have you seen this axe anywhere else or know anything about it?

Note the pick ups; 2 by the bridge; slanted in strat fashion and 1 by the neck. The Tele knobs and chrome switch knob, the VERY Yellow 3 Color Sunburst paint job, the Signiture and the Custom Shop decals on the head stock.

Well, isn't that interesting? Robbie Robinson was always a bit of an innovator with his Strats. He was the first I can think of to put a humbucker at the bridge, with a little switch to control it - clearly visible in The Band's film The Last Waltz. 1976, would that be?

Did anyone do that before him?

Thinking back to that concert, he and Clapton have a history of inviting one another on stage, don't they?

Don't know anything about this guitar, and I'd like to. We have amongst us those who keep a close eye on the doings of the Custom Shop. Wonder if they know anything...?

Some "innvoator".... Man, with that Strat that has the middle pickup moved down alongside the bridge pickup, that Robbie Robinson guy is totally ripping off Robbie ROBERTSON.

:D

On the question:

I recall reading an interview with him regarding his preference for removing the center pickup because it interfered with his picking style. I may be wrong but I don't believe there's a humbucker in this guitar nor in the guitar he used for 'The Last Waltz>" The layout, given the date of 'The Last Waltz', is certainly a prevision of the HH format. In addition, from what they did with the early '90's Tele Plus', an SH or an SS wouldn't be a bad idea particularly using noise cancelling pups and coil splitting circuits. They could come up with some interesting tones.

The finish appears to be one of the other 'burst' options that Fender offers. (Check out the color chart.) I've seen it before, notably on a guitar that Jerry Allison used for the "Strat Pack" concert in England, and you can also see this finish on a guitar Jimmie Vaughan is playing if you go to the Jimmie Vaughan "Artist" site in the catalog.

As far as the other 'doodads' they may simply reflect what he ordered from the CS and the signature may either be his or the builder's, although the builder's usually goes on the back. Perhaps ithis is an RR prototype we are lookng at.

You never know what these guys are up to. Generate enough interest and, Kaboom!!, they've got your pennies in the bank.

Hope this has been of some help and that there are others out there who can add to this. I would certainly be interested in more.

The Strat seen in "The Last Waltz" is as I described: the middle pickup was moved down alongside the bridge pickup (not a humbucker). It is widely supposed that it was to accommodate Robertson's fingerpicking style, and that the mod was done by Seymour Duncan. I'd guess this one in the pics above is set up the same way.

Ha-ha - yeah, that's right!

Or is is? Oh man, I feel one of those Stevie Ray Vaughan / Vaughn / etc arguments coming on. I'm off to hide in a corner till the dust settles...

Where's the emoticon for terrified panic?

All this piques the curiosity. Makes for having a closer look at those two videos again. We're on the same page with the picking style so that covers one issue.

Doc.

Thanks.

So in the film that's two singles side by side at the bridge, not a 'bucker? Well, that blows that piece of bar-room wisdom out the water... Interestinger and interestinger, to misquote the young lady.

Gotta say, if we're heading for another name-spelling row, valium just ain't going to make it. It's a big dose of sertraline I'm reaching for. (Gilmour, Gilmore, Gilmoor - help!)

The box to the right in this article is about his gear, and he talks about the strat he used during The Last Waltz among others. It a pretty cool read. http://theband.hiof.no/articles/rr_musician_sep_87.html

I wish fender would start producing these. Let's just say I would be vary interested in trying one. :)

Oh and btw, that site is quite awesome. It has got tabs to just about every The Band Song. :)

Ha! That's a great link, thanks! The story about Seymour Duncan and the "extra windings" is a topper. If it ain't true, it should be!

Just to cross-match here with stuff that's going on in the other Robbie Robertson thread running on this forum right now... What he's saying is that he moved the middle single-coil hard up against the bridge one and then wired them in series - which turns two single-coils into a humbucker, don't it? Is that right? Jim?

So then everybody's right. He has two single-coils at the bridge, and he has a humbucker. How do you write that - SS(H)S? S+S=H;S? Or am I still completely off beam?

Oh, man, this stuff always makes my brain ache. Pass the sertraline, someone.

I think the twin coils of a humbucker have to be wired of out phase with each other. Just wiring the pickups "together" as Robbie describes it, wouldn't do it. I think you'd just get a massive single coil, like a P90 kind of thing.

That is, I think.

It seems Robbie isn't really sure how it's wired either, so your guess is as good as mine.

Please verify the URL. I'm coming up with a no-go on this link.

Thanks.
