What's crazy is the allegation that the seller's family attempted to return the instrument w/o success. Not to mention the fact that there's a resolved legal issue between Dylan and the seller in the matter of the materials which were ultimately sold at auction. Apparently there's more to the story of this guitar than has been made public.

Why does that sound crazy. It sounds plausable to me. Dylan was flying high at the time in more ways than one. I doubt that a left behind Strat got much consideration.

+1 :D

Hopefully not to vanish forever into a vault belonging to some collector in Japan...

well, there certainly could have been a settlement in which Dylan will get part of the proceeds, or some other concession, but then again, maybe not.

I find it so for the following reason. In the world of fortune and fame, individuals have come to be aware of their personal effects and what they might possibly represent from the stand point of collector's interest and value in the future. My closest friend and former drummer is a pilot and, for a good number of years flew passenger charters and carried many a celebrity in his journeys, The Keefer, to name one. A guitar carrried on a charter had to have had some personal reason for being on board and represented some value to Dylan, otherwise it would have gone with the rest of the gear by truck or air cargo. That the pilot discovered it, attempted to return it to Dylan, and could not make contact with his management is most strange. I say this because Dylan was a friend of my former wife's sister, and my home phone number was on his call list. It was not unusual to hear from him at some ungodly hour, the proverbial 'phone booth in the Midwest', looking for her. He certainly could be found, if necessary. At the end of the day, there obviously was some interest on his part, given the legal matter which eventually ensued and was settled.

Well I will tell you this I WAS NOT the buyer. I have been to Paul Allen's The Experience Music Project in Seattle and is it wounderful also been to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum not as good but still wounderful. Rock and Roll can not pay for atifact they have to be donated or borrowed for a while while Paul can buy anything he wants

You never cease to amaze me. What a story. The whole thing seems odd to me as most musicians are attached to their instruments. Wonder if the pilot made a half hearted attempt?? Just read this in the news this morning: "Recently, Dylan and Ms Peterson quietly settled a legal dispute over the instrument. Details of the settlement are not known."

Also, if the story were true, I fail to see how the guitar became the property of the arranger.
The pilot allegedly found it, and tried to return it. He then handed it to the festival people to try to return it. If they couldn't, surely their obligation would be to return it to the pilot (or the pilot's company)?

This stinks of greed. And it's not a pleasant smell. What would be decent would be to lend the guitar to a museum (lend, so they can't turn around and sell it).

Thats what I have been thinking the whole time I feel it should have gone to the (MIM) Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ where they have a wounderful collection from around the world. They have John Lennon's piano that he wrote imagine on, just to mention one. Image

Well....looks like everyone's got a favorite charity. However, it is widely viewed in our culture that charity begins at home. I'd still love to know the terms of the settlement which seems to figure so prominently in this tale. That would close the circle, I am certain.

A settlement is payday for at least two lawyers. I don't hold much stock in a settlement equaling truth in any way. I earn part of my living as a consultant for lawyers, so I may be biased against them, with good reason. :)

I've been married to one for over twenty years so let's not go there suffice it to say that my wife would put it this way:

"So you have a problem with lawyers :?: Well, the next time a DUI runs a red light, puts you or one of your loved ones' in the hospital as a quadriplegic, or worse..call a guitar player

Paris...it's a run of the mill '65 Strat. What could they[possibly do with it to make it unique?
