Depends on the soung that you're looking for. The EMGs that I have produce two great sounds... Smooth high gain and pristine cleans. They don't seem to handle in-between those sounds too well. Specifically, I have EMG 81, 85, and SAs.

EMS SAs are their "single-coils," probably best known because David Gilmour used them.
For high gain and cleans, you'll probably be really happy with the EMGs. One thing to consider though is that they're active pickups, so you'll need to put a 9 volt battery somewhere. This means that every six months, you'll either have to pop off your pickguard or you'll have to get your guitar routed to install a 9-volt battery compartment.
Another great thing about the EMGs is that they are dead silent.

Custom Shop Texas Special single coils. These are on the Custom Shop Signature SRV, the Signature Mark Knopfler, and many others. They are vintage but with a bit more midrange for warmth and great blues tone. These aren't noiseless, but have the classic single coil sound. Noise levels are very low in all positions with tone at 6, and non-existent in the hum-cancelling 2 and 4 switch positions.

Depends on your amp too, which is most of the tone anyway. My MIA strat with a JB Jr on the bridge can be used as a very clean jangly single coil, I can dial up the inner coil to a very P90 sound, and make it a full humbucker, which will shred you pants through my Mesa Boogie with not problem, and rattle your fillings. You might not get as much gain as a nice EMG active, but through a Boogie or another hi-end tube amp, I don't know how much you'd really notice anyway.
