I disagree. Bass players in 3-piece bands don't need twangy bright sounds.
Jack Bruce certainly never did. I used a Precision Bass with flatwounds for that thumpy old school sound -- the exact opposite of "twangy bright."

What the bass needs to do is provide the musical progression from the rhythm guitar. Being an octave down isn't a problem. In fact, it's better as to provide separation between the bass and guitar.

Huh? He didn't rely on distortion.

Just my two pence worth. I have played in trios most of my career and found that when playing the backing rhythm, using a slighter lighter touch on the chords but a heavy touch on the percussive chop tricks the listener into hearing a very full backing. When you stop to solo the drummer takes over the percusive sound and the loss of chords is nowhere near as noticeable. Just a thought.

I didn't figure it out until I started playing solo acoustic shows.

Pedals aren't going to fix the problem. The solution is in your fingers.

1. A solo shouldn't be considered as anything but service to the song.
2. A solo should have a set of dynamics to it.
3. Chuck Berry is your best friend.

Good luck!

There certainly wasn't any YouTube - listening to records over and over again, and trying to pin down the riffs was what we all did. And most of the time got it wrong, because it isn't all that easy to hear just which string is being played.
I finally said "sod it" and made my own riffs instead.

I saw a trio busking a while back and the guitarist used a lot of wah in the intrumental sections which really filled things up. It impressed me so much that a wah pedal will be appearing on my board in the very near future.

Surprisingly enough, with an 'el cheepo' 45 rpm record player, I managed to do quite well nailing those Johnny B Goode, Memphis, School Days, Carol, Back in the USA, Little Queenie, and Roll Over Beethoven solos. There's a few others I'm still noodling just for fun.
