I got a new ej strat 3 weeks ago, this is my second guitar, and probably my last (I'm going to play it for a long time...)

But the smell from the lacquer is still really strong. I've started airing it over night instead of leaving it in the case, but I think it will still take time to die off. Now, I think the smell has gotten to me. I have had strange stomach feelings ever since I got it.

What should I do? Just keep airing it?

Yes, that's about all you can do.

Hi jtp337,

Maybe the smell is mostly from the case, not as much from the guitar. Of course the guitar will pickup the smell from the case. For new guitars, I sometimes leave the empty case open for a couple of weeks, also letting the guitar air-out.

The strange stomach feelings are from the stress of thinking you spent a lot of money on something that isn't right. So relax and let it air out.

My original am standard reeked but it turned out it was just the case it was in. I let the strat air out and left the case open in the basement. It took a lifetime for the smell in that case to give it up. But the strat freshened up pretty quickly.

+1

It may take some time for the adhesives used to affix the lining to the interior of the case to fully out-gas.

As well, if the guitar's lacquer is not yet fully cured it should remain exposed to ambient air for as long as it takes the odor to subside. Do not place the guitar on one of those stands with the rubber pads on the support arms -- they can often permanently stain or mar a body's lacquer finish.

My Vhr 57 still smells after three years. For the first week I had to let the case sit in the garage for a week because the smell was making me sick. I actually like the nitro smell so it doesn't bother me anymore.

My case may have had the glue problem, either way I still feel lucky that I got the tweed case considering that they don't supply them for as many guitars now. Really, the case was one of the deal-breaker decisions I had when I bought the Vhr.

Interesting- I would have thought that the deal breaker would have been that it's a really nice guitar.

I also let the case sit out in the sun, that baked out the smell. As far as the guitar is concerned it was the nicest sounding one that I tried that day unplugged. Yes, I never plugged it in until I got home and I haven't seen another one in the stores that was built as nice as mine. That also sold it too me. I got lucky, right place/right time. I might switch the pups though. I'm thinking lace sensors like Pete and Eric.
