Hey folks,

I just got a Callaham hardware set for my strat custom build and it looks fantastic. I'm really excited.

Now the tuners I got with it are for a 11/32 hole. (15:1 ratio) I've been told that this is the standard tuning hole size for all Fender Strat necks. Is this true?

If it isn't, which fender necks do have that size? Thanks for all your help!

Cheers
-Tom

In short, no it isn't the standard size found on modern Fenders.

Most modern tuners fit a 10 mm (13/32 inch) hole in the peghead (including Grover, Schaller, Sperzel, Gotoh, etc). Therefore, most contemporary guitar models, including Fenders, are drilled with 10 mm holes.

In the past, American-made tuners often had 11/32 inch holes so to maintain verisimilitude a guitar that boasts "vintage" tuners will likely have this sized holes. When those manufacturers named above offer "vintage" tuners they will in all probability fit 11/32 holes.

Check the specs of guitars such as Classic Strats, reissues and such like. If they mention vintage tuners they will almost certainly be fitted in 11/32 holes. Otherwise, it's 10 mm.

Incidentally, if you have 11/32 holes and want to fit modern 10 mm tuners absolutely THE ONLY way to make the modification to the hole is using a tool called a "cello peghole reamer". It is absurdly expensive for what it is, and the amount of use you will get out of it, but there is no viable alternative (contrary to what you may be told). On the other hand, if you want to put vintage tuners in modern holes, there are little bushings you can obtain to achieve a fit. I've lots more information, if wanted...
