There's no problem strumming your Strat with your pick if you have an HHH setup placed in an SSS arrangement, hence a reason for which DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence, Joe Barden and Seymour Duncan offer humbuckers housed into a single coil format.

Right, the single coil size humbuckers would be best for me if I needed to buck the hum!

That's precisely how I do it......

And yet the guitar still retains the visual vibe of a traditional Stratocaster as Leo designed it.

The guitar is a Classic Series '50s Strat from 1998, with DiMarzio Virtual Vintage noiseless pickups in all three positions.

Does it have a C shaped neck like the 62s or a V shaped like the 57s? I love the vintage RI Strats. I do not have any right now but really need to get one again. Too many Strat Plus guitars as the moment. Thanks for sharing. I live the DiMarzio VV pickups. Great tone with those.

Just finished building 1991 Plus Custom in Transparent Crimson Frost on Ash with a Black/Red/Black pickguard using black knobs and pickups. Neck is a Purple, Middle is a Silver and Bridge Dually is a Red/Burgundy. Had a Rosewood neck. I would share a picts but no decent camera at the moment. Plays super and does sound really great.

With this discussion about three humbuckers in a Strat, it occured to me that today I am going to go look at doing a trade on a (shhhhh....!) Gibson Victory MVX guitar. (MVX = Multiple Voice Ten) It came with two special design magnet/iron loaded humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions, and a "Super Stack" humbucker in the middle. Solid Maple with a set-neck with ebony fingerboard. One volume and tone control. Five position "blade" pickup selector switch (neck, neck and bridge, middle, middle and bridge, bridge), coil tap switch for single coil/humbucking tonalities (all pickups). Odd duck and only around 2000 where made between 81-83/84

Xhefri,

Never saw one of those before. Looks like a Gothic vision of a Strat. Since it's a Gibson, does it have a set neck? And is the body mahogany?

Their big advantage: there's no need to rout an SSS body for a triple full-sized humbucker setup and change your existing pickguard.
I'm also one of those guys who has trouble picking without hitting a humbucker pickup, having to shift my hand from my most comfortable muting position on the bridge. That's one of the reasons I put Mighty Mite blades in this '93 Strat.

Man, that's ugly. It's a good thing there aren't many of those around!
Does it have two loop hooks (or whatever they are called)in the bottom edge?

I agree with you here. I would just not be comfortable with those pickups getting in the way of my picking. I have a lot more room with the single coils.

When you pick or strum a Strat, do you hit the pickups under the strings? I just never have my pick go that far down to allow anything under the strings to affect my playing. I have heard of guys not liking Strats because of the 5-way switch being in the way of strumming. I can visualize sweeping strokes to do that! I picture Pete Townshend!

Ah-ha. Just for the sake of idle chatter, I recall that back in the mid-'70s Pete Townshend used to have his Les Pauls modified with a full-size DiMarzio humbucker added between the two mini-humbuckers those guitars came with stock. So he obviously had no difficulty finding space for his pick.

On the other hand, a few years ago Townshend once had to leave the stage to go to hospital to have his hand removed from the bridge of his Strat, where it had become embedded on the metalwork during particularly aggressive windmill move.

I guess players each have their own particular picking style problems!

Far as three full-size humbuckers goes, I'm with OrvilleOwner. It's odd, but I find I somehow collide with pickups if I don't pick in between them - and I don't even use a plectrum, so it seems to make no objective sense. I think sometimes you almost want to pluck from underneath the string for emphasis (Eric Johnson talks about that), and even though I have my pickups set quite low they're sort of in the way.

I've tried HHH Les Paul Black Beauties a couple of times. They look cool - can't get on with them. Too cramped.

Cheers - C

I installed a set of three humbcker Johnny Blade D.Allen pickups in my 2010 NOS American Standard a couple of weeks ago. Johnny Blades are great sounding pickups.

Looks like a guitar stand.
