Maybe a Strat sized rails humbucker in the middle? Or are you meaning 3 full sized humbuckers? I think there is a gap in the range for one. Also an S1 switch for coil tapping :)

I mean both.

It depends the body routing.

Fender makes bodies routed for three full-sized HBs as special orders and limited-edition runs, so it's possible this American Deluxe HHH could be released as a Factory Special Run and not as a regular production model.

Three singlecoil-sized rails like those found of the Billy Corgan signature models, Dave Murray's axes and the aforementioned Squire Deluxe Hotrails Strat can also be considered as an HHH setup since they're humbuckers.

Sonny Landreth has fitted one of his Strats with a DiMarzio HHH configuration (Fast-Track 1 in the bridge, Fast-Track 2 in the middle and Chopper in the neck).

Over the years I have experimented with several configurations using humbuckers, Laces Sensors, and Lace Duallys. Several years ago I built the guitar below with two DiMarzio Classic Humbuckers pickups with a Chrome Dome Lace Sensor pickup in between. The neck pickup is a (DP-194) and the bridge is a (DP-195). I used a coil splitting switch for the humbuckers (thus killing one side of the windings on the humbucker) so they can act more like a single coil pickup. The problem I found was this configuration lost a lot of the vintage Strat tones in positions #2 & #4.

Image Image Image

I then found a nice solution and that was to use a humbucker in the neck and then use the Chrome Domes for the rest of the pickups. The back end of the guitar was wired like a Strat Ultra. Since a Dually is really two single coils, side-by-side, one could get the nice Stratty tones in positions #2 & #4 but still have a Les Paul/PRS type of tone in the neck. I have built several of these as some of you might recall on the Forum. Really a versatile configuration.

The closest I came to doing what Chromeface has mentioned is seen with this Crimson Frost Plus using two Chrome Dome Duallys and a single Chrome Dome in the middle:

Using 3 Duallys with the Hemi covers sounds kind of appealing. One could have all the vintage tones as well as fat humbucker tones as well (I explain the configuration in the next paragraph.) And it would look cool as well. The Hemi looks like this as you can see the bridge pickup in this Plus (below) I built a few years back. They can be made to keep the pickups totally independent under one cover.

Image Image Image

So imagine 3 Hemi pickups with 6 Lace Sensors stashed underneath! I would configure it this way: Blue/Gold - neck; Silver/Gold - middle; Purple/Red - bridge. Using mini-toggle switches one could have it be a totally 50s sounding Strat using just the Golds Laces,or a Strat Plus Deluxe using the Blue/Silver/Red, or 3 fat sounding humbuckers having the each of the Duallys pickups in series. Colors? How about a Candy Apple Red body with a aged Vintage Pearl pickguard and a maple neck??? Or a Black body with Black Pearl pickguard using a Rosewood neck?? Sounds kind of intriguing... :? Your thoughts???

This combination would be pretty cool, especially with the addition of a Clapton circuit to enhance things a bit. :D

Sounds like a fantastic idea. I always knew hemi's were wired like a single coil, but are you suggesting using the covers and putting duallys inside them?

6 pickups- wow! :)

I'm thinking candy apple red would be a real looker :)

I agree with you here. I would just not be comfortable with those pickups getting in the way of my picking. I have a lot more room with the single coils.

When you pick or strum a Strat, do you hit the pickups under the strings? I just never have my pick go that far down to allow anything under the strings to affect my playing. I have heard of guys not liking Strats because of the 5-way switch being in the way of strumming. I can visualize sweeping strokes to do that! I picture Pete Townshend! I guess there are different styles of playing. I remember Robbie Robinson moved the middle single coil on a Strat to be with the bridge pickup because it interfered with his playing. I am thinking out loud here... In any case it will be an interesting experiment. Maybe a build thread??? :?: If there is an interest....

Robbie Robertson, not Robinson.

Robbie has his guitars fitted with the usual 3-single coil setup except the middle and bridge pickups are placed side by side in a slanted humbucker fashion.

One of his Strats is equipped with a Washburn Wonderbar.

Image

The Chicago-based company eventually approached him to promote their Chicago KC100 superstrats in the late 1980s.

Robbie's moonburst signature model has two dual-coil Ceramic Noiseless pickups in the bridge (placed side by side and wired like a humbucker in series) and a Vintage Noiseless pickup in the neck. Few prototypes were equipped with a mini Floyd Rose locking tremolo assembly but Robbie was apparently not satisfied and the final design got an American 2-point bridge with stainless steel block saddles.

Image

I've also found a picture of him cradling a blackburst Strat Plus with Lace Sensors.

Not necessarily.

There are a few Ibanezes sporting a 3-humbucker setup (i.e. PGM200).

Pictured guitar is not mine.

Recently Fender began offering many of their Stratocasters with an HSH configuration.

The J5 Triple Fat Telecaster is the only genuine Fender guitar having an HHH setup and it's a shame they not offer a Strat with such layout.

I already know that Fender sells Stratocaster pickguards routed for three full-sized humbuckers, but they're a few customers seeking for a genuine American-made Triple Fat Strat.

At least release an American Deluxe HHH with three Modern Twinheads, S1 switching and a mini Floyd Rose bridge! :)

J5 Triple Fat Tele... please correct me if I am wrong; but is that REALLY a $1200 MIM Tele?

More like $1050 actual retail, but yeah, a bit too much IMO. With a Strat bridge, three hum-buckers, I can't even really refer to it as a Tele..... :(

I guess I tend to have my single coil pickups much lower than I have my humbuckers. The scratches on my humbucker covers tell me that I do hit them (more than I hit the single coils). With two humbuckers, I have a big space to pick. With three, I would be very cramped.

YMMV.

There's no problem strumming your Strat with your pick if you have an HHH setup placed in an SSS arrangement, hence a reason for which DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence, Joe Barden and Seymour Duncan offer humbuckers housed into a single coil format.

Image

Their big advantage: there's no need to rout an SSS body for a triple full-sized humbucker setup and change your existing pickguard.

Right, the single coil size humbuckers would be best for me if I needed to buck the hum!
