Hi,

I bought a HSS American Standard with the intention of changing the humbucker and I am trying to decide what to go for.

I tried a Custom shop HSS with two Fat 50s and an EVH Frankenstein which I loved the sound of but not the compound radius maple neck, so I decided to mod an American standard to get close.

I could go with the Frankenstein but I think that it is not Fender spaced, not available in Zebra, not available with the Fender style three screw base plate and only two core wired so I can't split it.

It looks like the best bet may be an SD Custom Custom which meets all my criteria.

I am also thinking about a Bare Knuckle VHII or a Creamery Alnico II 59 or an 83.

All of my current Humbuckers are Vintage PAF types and I fancy something hotter in this strat.

So would these all play nicely with my Fat 50s which I like and does anyone have any experience with any of the above pickups or have any more recommendations.

Thanks

Ian

I don't have any actual experience with it, but I was leaning towards the Custom Custom (or the Custom 5 actually). Based on the specs, it seems like good all around, versatile humbucker.

The actual physical size of a tremucker is the same as a standard humbucker. There will be no issues in fitting a humbucker into the guard. That said, I think pups with a chrome cover might possibly be an issue. I have never tried that so I could be mistaken. The main difference between them is the spacing of the poles and that difference is not as much as most folks assume. Lots of folks install standard buckers without problems. Another difference which might possibly come into play is the issue of 3 mounting screws versus 2. You'll want to be sure you get the right pup in that regard but you can also get another scratch plate if the pup you really want does not match the plate you have.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If I can get a trembucker I would rather go that way and all the other options are available as trembuckers.

The evh is definitely out as I can't split it in position 2, I need a new scratch plate as it doesn't have a fender three hole option and it's not available in zebra, I'm also assuming it is a short leg buckler as I don't want to route my strat

I was looking for opinions as to what would be a good medium output humbucker to go with my fat 50s.

Myself? I would use Fender's Humbucker and change the magnet from Alnico 5 to Alnico 2.
Give it that soft velvety spongy sound of the 57 Classic its as easy as 1-2-3.

If thinking about the Bare Knuckle VHII you might want to think of there Black Dog pickup. I have done some preload guards for sale with Bare Knuckle pickups and do like them. Used both these buckers.

Right on I have just really been digging swapping Magnets to get the pickup I want for pennies.
With humbuckers, coil winds and magnet type are your key factors.

In one of my Les Pauls I just changed the Alnico 5 out in a 498t for an Alnico 2 and its Like a 57 Classic Super Plus now at 13.5k
