Hi there, I have an early 90s American Standard which I have had for 20 years now. Due to life pressures and small children, it has been in storage for maybe five or six years, stored in its Fender flight case and put away safely, I hasten to add.

When I got it back out, there was a really noticeable hum when I started playing, and a few days later I started getting the sound cutting out - this was quite positional and if I pulled the lead behind me, so it was passing around the back of the guitar it would come back, although a bit crackly. Now the output is gone completely.

Am I right to be suspecting a loose wire at the input jack here? Are there any other obvious sources of trouble? If it's just a case of resoldering the jack I'd be happy to do that myself, but if it's replacement parts I'd rather get someone who knows what they're doing on the case.

Many thanks, in advance.

Michael

Hi majander,

That's the most logical place to start, and easy enough to remove two screws and check.

Don't rule out the cable. That's the easiest place to start....

Check the lead first, then the jack socket, you may find that the contacts just need bending over slightly so that they are making good contact with the jack on the lead.

It may also be worth spraying the switch and pots with contact cleaner, especially as its been sitting for a while.

Thanks one and all.

I had checked the lead already - I have fallen for that one before ;)

It was a corroded contact on the jack socket - desoldered, wire trimmed and resoldered and I am back in business. Many thanks folks!
