I got a December Musicans Friend Catalog and there is a "New" USA Professional Standard Stratocaster HSS on page 9, but I cannot find the specs for this guitar on the Fender web site. Has anyone bought one of these yet? What pick-ups are in it?

I saw that and was wondering the same thing myself. But if you look on their website it says it's a "dealer exclusive," so it looks to be a one-off Factory Special Run just for Musician's Friend.

There's not a lot on that spec sheet which I'd consider a leg-up from a regular Am Std. At least the latter comes with a hardcase.

There's also a matching Telecaster with an HS configuration fashioned after the 1st generation Telecaster Plus without the mini-toggle coil-tap switch and a '70s-style headstock logo.

Both guitars sport a Fender DH-1 Humbucker with zebra bobbins.

There's the "custom wound" pickups and the coil-splitting humbucker but I do tend to agree with you, Toronado. Sounds like some good marketing work by GC. The name is definitely cool. Don't you think Fender USA Professional Standard is at least half a leg up on American Standard?

    Cheers!

Humbucker is a DH-1 Atomic with zebra bobbins.

Same humbucking pickup used on the Pawnshop Super-Sonic and the MIM FSR HSS TBX Boost Strat.

I looked at it and thought WTF? I dont see it , but what do I know? 999 for a strat without a case? So add a case and its the same price as an American Standard. Why not just offer the MIA Standard without a case? The "coil splitting" humbucker isnt anything new IMO.

My thoughts exactly.

It has the same Highway 1 American Special Mexican Standard tremolo bridge as well.
It would need replaced with a Blade Runner if you wanted to use it.
Better off with an American Special or American Standard from my seat.

I dont see the coil split for the bridge humbucker as being a big selling point. Maybe a superswitch for when its in the middle/bridge position I could see, but that has been done before.

That's not an opinion; it's a fact.

I still say best Fender Stratocaster for the money is the American Standard.
I really want a rosewood 3 tone sunburst with a humbucker to add to my stable someday soon.

I saw these when I got an MF catalog a while back; it really appears that they were trying to come up with something to fall in-between the American Special and the American Standard with some kind of twist. The Tele is a bit more of a unique model with the bridge humbucker but the Strat is just a variation on the American Special HSS version.

I agree. The problem is they are so closely related. The American Special started out as being the HWY 1, which was the specs of the old American Standard with the vintage 6 point trem, 2 string trees and a flat finish and a gig bag. Now they have a gloss finish and large headstock. I dont see the market for that guitar in that price range. If you want a case it basically costs you the same as an American Standard. So really it all boils down to "coil splitting bridge humbucker" IMO. Its not something the Fender crowd is really looking for if you ask me.

I think it is an FSR that is intended to be inferior to the American Standard at a price break. Weird marketing... it is $100 higher than an American Special and $200 lower than an American Standard. No hard case and unspecified pickups.

Maybe it is just another special run to use up overstock parts and offer another "under $1k" US model just in time for Christmas... nothing really "professional" about it!
