Hi guys
I have a 2005 custom shop 65 relic strat. The finish on the neck is nitro. It appears that it first had a coat of clear nitro , then an amber coloured coat on top of that. The top coat is wearing off.
what I would like to do is to reapply more of the second coat where needed. Is this a possibility ? I know I could go to a luthier but I enjoy doing things myself, and from what I read nitro is quite forgiving.
Anybody know if the nitro sold by Allparts or Stewart-MacDonald will do this ?
Any comments or advise greatly appreciated .

Many Thanks
Mike

I don't get it, are you saying that your relic guitar is starting to get real wear and you want to return it to the pristine worn condition that it originally had when it was brand new but just looked worn?

What part of "relic" don't you understand?

:P

I should have guessed that this would happen ,so what you have to realise is that this guitar when sold in 2005 was a relic , but a mild relic.
The body was a bit bashed and has brilliant checking! thats all great for me.
The neck on the other hand was not reliced at all.
Now if you can get your head around the fact that I love this guitar but I preferred the neck the way that it was. What I particularly don't like is the fact that under the tinted nitro is a coat of pristine clear nitro ,showing a very pale white wood that spoils the whole look because it looks new and not aged and is showing no signs of wear.
What I had hoped for was a little advise on how this could be achieved,
Sarcastic comments are not helpfull!

I understanding exactly what you are trying to achieve, and I think it can be done, if you are very patient, with spray in a can Nitrocellulose from Mohawk.

Hurray !!!
A sensible answer, Thanks Aaronk, that is exactly what I was thinking but what I wonder is, will the new spray can nitro merge seamlessly with the existing or could there be some adverse reaction. I realise it will take many coats to build up, but no probs, I have the time.

Many thanks for your answer.

Mohawk state that the spray is seamless, in other words it will blend perfectly with the existing nitro, when it comes to the "perfect-blend clear coat" aerosol. And you could use a color match toner under that to match existing color. If you search google for "Mohawk Nitrocellulose" you will see other forums that discuss this topic.

Hee-hee: I must admit, I share some of the surprise on this thread about wanting to de-relic a guitar bought for its relic finish. Still, that's not the question that's being asked, for which there is a simple and achievable solution...

Hi guys: respectfully, I wouldn't go the toner + clear-coat route.

What Fender have done is use an amber tinted nitro lacquer to give the look of somewhat aged finish. For that matter, these days they are using lightly tinted lacquer on many models, not just relics.

All you need to do is use a tinted lacquer to retouch the areas that have worn thin. "Vintage" amber tinted nitro in an aerosol is available these days from many sources. Including:

http://reranchstore.stores.yahoo.net/tinclearcoat.html

and

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Finishing_s ... 1&xsr=4841

amongst others.

(If you're outside the US I can recommend other sources for these products, which are usually not shippable across international borders.)

Getting a seamless blend into the existing finish is up to your skill at using the product. Feather-blending is sometimes harder than you might think, especially with tiny areas.

A more professional approach would be to buy a tin of clear nitro (the Behlen Nitrocellulose Stringed Instrument Lacquer on Stew-Mac's pages is what I use, for example) and some ColorTone Liquid Pigment for Lacquer (also from Stew-Mac). You'd then very lightly tint the lacquer and use several layers to build up the exact tint you require. If the areas to be repaired are small you might even do that with a brush rather than an spray gun, for maximum control.

Whichever route you go, you then have to let it harden for several weeks and then knock it back and buff it out to a gloss or satin finish, as required.

Personally, on a relic model I wouldn't bother with any of that. But each to his own, as far as the look of his guitar goes.

Good luck - C

This has to be the most(ridiculously)funniest thing I've ever heard. Restoring a reliced guitar to new condition. The irony is so humorous.
