I am considering buying a new AVRI. I already own a maple board Strat so I would like to have a rosewood board to compliment it. For right now I have it narrowed down the AVRI '59 or the '65. For me the most important feature of any guitar is the neck profile. If it doesn't feel right I have a tough time being motivated to play it.

The '59 has what Fender calls a "Slim D" profile. The '65 has a "Large C". After hearing some demos on the net I really like the sound of the '59 over the '65. More jangly and quacky to my ears than the '65. But if it has the wrong neck profile I know I will never be happy with it.

What I don't want is a skinny neck. The best examples I can use is the '95 Strat Plus I use to own. This had what was called a "Modern C" neck profile. I loved the sound of that guitar but couldn't stand that neck, so I sold it. I also once had a early 90's AVRI '62 Strat. Didn't care much for that neck, either.

Is the Slim D similar to the Modern C? Is there anyplace I can find diagrams or measurements of these profiles? I haven't been able to find an AVRI '59 locally so I may have to order one from an online store. I'd hate to get it and find I have to return it because of the neck.

Anyway, thanks for any help on this.

Well, I did my own homework and I'll share what I found out.

Yesterday I located a '59 and a '65 at a local shop.

The '65 was really a nice guitar. Custom Shop quality. Real nice weight and played great. I just didn't care for the sound of the pups. Others might, not me. The neck, though, felt great. Large C. Filled my hand nicely (I have larger hands and thin, long fingers) and felt "right at home" That's the neck for me.

The '59 they had was a maple board but it does have the Slim D neck profile. I just didn't like the feel at all. If you've ever played a Gibson with their "Modern 60's" neck, that's what this felt like, but with maybe a little more heft. It has a very flat feeling on the back and felt that my fingers were being restricted at the place on the back of the neck where it curved to the shoulder. Does this description make sense? If not, my apologies. Obviously these necks appeal to some people or they wouldn't make so many of them this way. Just not for me. I like my necks round with a little heft. Large C.

I have to say, though, that '59 was beautiful. The neck was full of 3-D flame and that 3-tone burst with maple neck looks really cool. It was very light-weight and the pickups sound great.
Again, CS type guitar.

Hope this helps others considering this guitar. Cheers.
