What's the difference between a noise gate and a noise suppressor? Do they get rid of the humming Lund from single coil pickups? How do they exactly work? I have a Fender Standard Stratocaster SSS and don't want to change my pickups or get a new guitar. I'm still new to playing an electric guitar( I've been play acoustic for a year). I heard that hum debugger is good, does that work the same as a noise gate or a suppressor?

A noise gate cuts out noise below a certain threshold.
A noise suppressor does the same, only using a different name to describe its actions.

On guitar it sounds unnatural, and as such should be avoided.

Your guitar will make all kinds of noise above what you intend - learn to live with it, and spend your time learning how to play better.

-Noise gate closes when you're signal is below a threshold point = no sound.
-Noise suppressor never closes just remove hiss and hum(depends on the model).

So noise suppressor removes all noise while you're playing keeping your signal "clean" and noise gate removes nothing, it just closes when you stop playing so there won't be sound between two separate parts but while you're playing noise is there.

A noise gate chops the entire signal below a volume threshold you select.
A noise suppressor normally has a noise gate built into it but it also attempts to reduce noise before the gate cuts off the signal completely. Sometimes it does that by sensing feedback and reducing the level of frequencies involved in the feedback. Sometimes it employs compression. There are different schools of though on what makes the best noise suppressor. Adding a volume pedal to your signal chain can also be useful for keeping hush between songs.

The Rocktron Hush pedal gets good reviews. You place it last on your pedal board signal chain.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Single-coils don't make noise -- they receive noise from external sources. Fluorescent lamps, neon lamps, old-style CRT TV's/computer monitors, dimmer switches, electric motors, and transformers are the most common sources.

If you're not playing in bars or clubs where you have no control over noise sources, and you don't live next to a power company's substation with dozens of giant transformers, the cheapest and most effective way to reduce noise is to turn off things that make electrical noise, or sit farther away from them if you can't turn them off. If you have lights controlled by a dimmer switch anywhere in your house, either turn the switch all the way up (full brightness) or turn them off. If you play while using the computer and have an old CRT monitor, consider using the money you'd spend on a noise gate to buy an LCD display. If you have large-tube fluorescent lighting, buy a couple of table/floor lamps and use those while you play.

If your Standard Strat is an older Mexican model, shield the body cavities with copper foil or conductive paint (there are lots of tutorials on the web explaining the process). That will block much of the noise and keep it from reaching the pickups. (Recent Mexican Standards may already be shielded -- the older ones weren't but I don't know about current ones.)
