Hey guys,

Last week I bought a Fender Custom Shop Custom Classic Strat. However the case I got with it seemed to be the wrong one (it was a beaten up limited edition one). I asked for a new one and they gave me one that looked like the custom shop case I had except this one has just one lock on it, whereas the limited one had 2. It has the fender logo under the handle. The inside is not the same material, it's more like wool, whereas the ltd edition one had velvet inside. It does have the G&G badge on it, but the storage partition is smaller than the one on the ltd case. I was wondering if it is possible that this is a real custom shop case or if I should demand a real one. It's not so much that I think it is fake, I'm just not sure that the case I got is an actual custom shop case. I mean, if I ever decide to sell it, I don't want to be called out on having a wrong case. I know they don't always have the custom shop logo inside, but do they always have velvet inside or do custom shop cases come with normal soft material inside aswell?
This is what mine looks like, I took it off the web so it's really small:

That does not look like a genuine G&G Strat case -- the storage pouch is mis-shapen and the outboard latches are not the traditional spring-loaded Cheney types.

This is the second incident I've heard about in the past week
regarding G&G case issues - maybe they're importing them now.

Not the G&G I remember. :?

Some time back I bought one of these.
They have a fender badge and from memory the G&G logo. They were cheaper and had a plastic rather than leather handle. I queried G&G on the quality and they never got back to me so I was never sure if they are a cheaper version a knock off or not. I sold it telling the buyer I could not be sure if it was even a true G&G.
To date I have never seen a custom shop strat come in one of these. The clear give away is the plastic handle.
I would request the correct case for your strat :D

Is this a new guitar from a Custom Shop dealer, or a used guitar from some store?

AFAIK the Custom Classic has been discontinued for a while, and since they've already swapped out the case for you I assume this is a used guitar that didn't have the original case when they bought it. If so, the selling price should reflect that -- they should charge less than if it had the original case, so if you ever resell it you shouldn't lose money (relatively speaking).

If it's a used guitar and they offered it to you with a non-original used Custom Shop case, it makes sense that if you asked for a new case instead they'd give you a new case that's worth about as much as a used CS case (i.e. a relatively inexpensive new case).

Obviously if it's a brand new guitar that's been sitting in their store for a couple of years you're entitled to the case that it came with (or an equivalent new CS case).

Thanks for the replies guys, quite helpful! It is indeed a new one (2010 model, but they just never sold it). The problem is they don't have the original case anymore. Should I demand for them to get me a new custom shop case?

I'd at least insist on a genuine G&G case.

It does have the G&G Badge on it though. How much will the resale value of the guitar take a hit if it doesn't come with an original case?

Does it have the plastic handle as I mentioned. If so then I found these just a fraction shorter which made it a tight fit for some strats.
If it were me and I had a choice between the two I would have gone for the beat up limited case so long as it was still fit for purpose. :D

I'd like to take one step back to verify if you have a COA for the guitar and all the case candy, which should have come in a sealed envelope with the guitar, as well as the inspection tags. Your Custom Care benefits and warranty as a first owner are depending upon your being able to prove the veracity of your purchase. Secondly, and IMHO, the guitar should NOT have been separated from the original case it was supplied with even though it's an older model year. That's the problem with guitars sitting on a wall waiting for a home. It's being represented and sold as 'new' because you are the first purchaser, but may not be unplayed. As far as knowing what can be defined as 'a real Custom Shop case' these days, they seem to change their design options frequently. You'd really have to know what they were sending out 3 years ago with a teambuilt guitar of your type, in terms of lining, pocket design, and exterior materials. However, if you don't have a high end US built G&G case for that guitar, they should get you one at no additional cost.
