On a local site I found an ad for this Fender Strat.. The deal looks a bit to good to be true, so I got a bit suspicious. Since I'm coming from the Epiphone corner my knowledge of Strat models isnt that good.

Are there any quick give aways that tell me if this is a bargain of garbage?

Totally bogus.

It looks to be a cheap copy of a Squier with a faux Fender decal applied to the headstock.

Very obvious non-Fender headstock decal. Plus it just looks generally cheap and nasty. Avoid like the plague.

It's a bad fake. You would do much better with a Squier Deluxe, Classic Vibe, or Vintage modified. Or even a Modern Player Strat for that matter, but stay away from this piece of garbage.

The lack of a skunk stripe is another pointer. And the body appears to be something like basswood, they love that stuff in the far eastern cheapo guitar copy workshops.

...not necessarily. While the "skunk stripe" is very common, not all varieties of Strats have it. A recent example of this is the Modern Player.

Yes, I had an E series MIJ Squier with no skunk stripe and my MIJ Tele is the same. It's just a pointer, not a definite indicator of a fake but when the rest of the guitar is so clearly cheap it counts as further circumstantial evidence.

Thinking about it, the MIJ Squier was basswood too, as is Jeff Beck's main Strat.

Many of the MIJ Fenders are made of Basswood that includes the MIJ Squire.
