I just picked up a used Jimmie Vaughn in Olympic white and I must say I really like it. The sound and the neck profile are just right and it's a joy to play. The serial number tells me it's a 1997 which I was not aware they made them back then. When did they start producing them?

Serial number is MSN700311

The Tex-Mex Strat became the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Signature in 1996. But the srial numbers are completely unreliable. The first ones had correct "MSN6xxxxx" serials, but apparently they printed way too many serial decals because they continued using the MSN9 prefix until 2004 or so, then they started using MSN7 serials. But again they had way too many, so they used MSN7 decals for many years. I don't know if they've finally caught up -- they may still be using MSN7 serials today.

So MSN7 only tells that your JV was built this century. To get an accurate build date you need to remove the neck and check the neck & body date stamps. Or email the full serial to Fender Customer Relations -- they can tell you the build date.

I think they were the first guitars with the Tex-Mex pickups.

They are great guitars.

Well, it may be awhile before I remove the neck for a view of the build date. I loaned it to a friend to do a set and holly crap that thing sounded awesome. Playing through a Vox with no effects he played Georgia Satellites and nailed the sound for "Keep your hands to yourself", I'm not touching anything on this guitar! He isn't a fan of Strats in general but he's a huge Telecaster fan but after he was done playing mine he was hooked!

My CAR JV's serial number is MSZ9xxxx. I bought it used in 2010. Not sure what year it is. It's an awesome instrument, I just love it.

The wiring on mine has been tweeked a little. A push/pull pot has been installed on the lower tone control that lights up all three pickups and it just give it that next step of sound, sort of like afterburners! :D

Yea , I would like to see what a push pull pot would be doing on that set up as well?

Next time I do a string change I'll get some tech info and pictures. I'll also pull off the neck and get the born on date out of the pocket area.

I have a push/pull pot my '79 Strat to activate the neck and bridge pickups. It's a very Blind Faith Clapton-like sound.

Remember when Charvel and Jackson used mini switches in the late 80s early 90s?
You could do any combo your heart desired, that was kind of cool.

My buddy, Mannie, and I were talking about just how important tone knobs are to our playing.

We had also discussed how much of an impact capacitors can make to altering guitar's tone. It got me thinking. I would love have, either an ap or a real device, which allows me to try out different types of pickup, capacitors and pots, to hear how they might sound before I put them into a guitar.

That is a very cool idea like pickup wiring and component models. I sort of listen to
straight ahead rock players on overdriven amps with little to no effects to hear it.
It lets you hear it better. Like Slash he is a perfect example of Alnico 2 vintage output
humbuckers wired 50s with orange drops in a Les Paul.
Jimi live is a really good example of CS-69s in a strat.
Iommi is a really nice example of high output ceramic humbuckers.
Anyway you get the picture, I research a lot of stuff in headphones and isolate a sound
I want. For Les Pauls its mostly a Slash sound and Strats its mainly a Jimi live.
To me Slash has everybody in his sound Jimmy Page Joe Perry etc. And everyone is
trying to still sound like Jimmy. Im all about a classic rock overdriven Les Paul and Strat

Just returned a Jimmy V, a shame the guitar was a beauty and sounded amazing!
Issue was the neck, higher on one side than the other? V,
Bought an Am Sp Strat with a C neck and it is perfect
Fender should make these guitars with a neck choice
