For quite a while I have had the action set quite high on my strat. but recently I decided to lower it as per the specs on the fender website (1.6mm at the 17th fret) sadly doing this causes an annoying rattle from every string and on every fret from the 5th fret down to the end of the fingerboard. even if they are set at 2mm at the 17th fret there is still quite a lot of rattle on each string at each fret.
the neck relief is correct, as is the nut and the intonation, but no matter what I do I still get the annoying rattle if I have my strings as low as fender recommend.
this was a brand new unplayed guitar when I got it three months ago, so there shouldn't be any problems with it.
could it be a problem with high frets or is there another problem I have missed?

A full setup would be my recommendation.

But the quick help probably is to loosen the truss rod a bit. 1/4 (or even 1/8 if you wanna be careful) turns at a time & see what happens.

Edit: NT, you beat me by a few seconds... :)

From what your stating... Neck Relief is correct, intonation is set proper... Nut is fine (figure you mean the action at the nut is correct and it is not cracked/broken in any way)... the 1st thing that comes to mind is you either need to have a few frets dressed or you need to level and recrown the frets.

Just because it's new does not mean the frets don't need dressing and/or levelling.

How are you measuring the neck relief?

Unless the neck relief is set very accurately using a capo and a .012" feeler gauge you're never going to get the action set right. Rattle from the 5th fret suggests to me that the neck is too straight and the guitar would benefit from having the truss rod released a little.

The neck has back bow and you need to loosen the truss rod.
