Well, just to close this out - we went back to the store this morning (Guitar Center in Sacramento) and talked to the assistant manger who originally helped us. He said that the store doesn't keep any of the paperwork that comes with the guitars - they just throw them all out.

I told him that I was really unhappy about that, but he said there was nothing he could do.

Someone earlier on this thread said that this store is usually pretty good about providing the paperwork/tags with new guitars- I guess that's no longer true :(

Apparently not.

A few years back I bought a little Frontman 15R from there to keep at a relative's home so I'd always have an amp to play through whenever I was in town. The sales staff opened the sealed carton, checked the amp for flaws or defects, then ascertained that all of the paperwork was contained within and made sure I was given a proper receipt and bill of sale to present if/when warranty service was ever needed.

As I mentioned, they were quite conscientious.

To hell with GC -- take your business to Skip's or go to Encore Music up in Auburn. They'll treat you right.

This guy's either total bullshit or telling you what they do, in that store, with the case candy from guitars they put up on the wall. A letter to corporate is in order. The managers may be violating policy in this regard. Next time you want a guitar from that store, have it ordered, and demand that they deliver to you the shipping carton, unopened, which you can then do yourself, and check out everything before you pay for and walk with it.

Thanks for your advice guys. That was the conclusion I came to as well - also, the possibility that the guy just didn't look and didn't want to.

Next time I'll be more careful. Still very happy with the guitar, although I feel a little like I paid full retail for a used model :)

Arrgg :x

While I was at Guitar Center to check on the paperwork for my guitar, I also returned the guitar tuner I purchased to exchange for a different model (I didn't like the one the salesman originally gave me). I got the new unit home and found that although it was supposed to include a battery and owner's manual, it had neither!

I opened it while at the store to make sure it had its documents and saw a large folded paper in there, which I assumed was the manual, but it was actually just the precautions paper. The manual comes on a separate paper.

Also, the salesman handed us a $10 gift card while we were walking out the door - I assumed it was a "sorry for things not going quite right", but when I got home I found that he actually charged us for the gift card!

I had a similar problem with the amp I purchased. It didn't come with it's accessories/manual either and you can clearly see that the box had been opened and re-taped.

I'm not sure I want to return to that store. Time to look for another place... Fool me once, shame on you and all...

Could this be the all-time low point for a GC transaction? I can't imagine anything worse.

Well, we confronted the salesman about the gift card. He said that the tuner is supposed to be $99, but it rings up on the register as $89, so they make us purchase a gift card to make up the difference. This makes no sense to me, since I could trade the gift card for $10 in merchandise anyway - why make me go through all that?

Oh, and it seems there was no "sorry for all the hassle" after all :(

They didn't have another tuner in stock, so we just returned it (and their gift card) and we'll check out the other places mentioned earlier (Skip's and Encore). I may go back there again, but I'll definitely take my "buyer beware" glasses with me :)

What a stark contrast to my experience only three or four years ago. Then, they couldn't do enough for me -- they bent over backwards ensure a smooth purchasing experience. I sympathize with your disappointment in that store. Sad, really......

To be fair, I only worked with the one gentleman - but he is an assistant manager. Perhaps it is just him...

Dude, call GC's corporate and complain about this. Sounds like this guy pegged you as a pushover. Not right. VERY unprofessional. I understand you just want the whole thing to be over and done but, This "manager" is taking advantage of people. Let the folks at corporate know that you've been so turned off by this transaction that they are losing a LOYAL customer because of it. Let them also know that you have friends that you are going to recommend they too, NOT shop at this store anymore.
You'll get results, trust me ;)
It's not out of spite... It's to correct a problematic situation GC is developing at one of their stores. They want to know about these types of things. And they do not want to lose loyal customers.

+1

Such a measure certainly couldn't hurt.

Neither would it hurt for them to know that you have already posted and discussed this 'event' in all its gory details on the FMIC Lounge Forums which has a world-wide participatory membership.
