Hey, I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these 'Vodoo stratocasers' from 97 to 99. I've been trying to find one recently but have had no luck. I was also looking at the MIM reverse headstock strats that go for like 300 quid, if its worth buying one of them and replacing the pickups.

Thanks, Shaheen

If you find an MIM which, in your hands is a good player, and the price is comfortable for you, they're always amenable to an upgrade. If your concerned about the veracity of price, send us a quote and a picture, preferably in $US.

I've got one of the MIM 60's Reverse Specials.
I went a bit overboard as far as modding it!
However.....I do LOVE it now!
I changed:
-the cheesy single ply pickguard
-the pickups....all DiMarzio Area series now..(they sound amazing!!)
-the neck.......yes...the neck! I hated the 7.25" radius Maple neck.....so I got a lefty Highway One 9.5" radius Rosewood neck.......SO much better!!
-Fender/Schaller locking tuners
About the only thing Mexican on this...is now the body itself!
Yeah...I'm a bit nuts......but now I've got a Voodoo Strat built to MY liking!!
Eventually ...when I have the cash to spare....I have a friend who is an unbelievable artist who I'm going to ask to do a MONTEREY paintjob on her! I already have a MONTEREY backplate and a body sticker replica from the original!

The USA made '97/'98 Voodoo Strats and the post-'98 '68 Reverse Reissue Stratocasters (I have 2 Voodoos and 1 '68 Reverse) are exceptional quality instruments, I'm absolutely crazy about them. The '68 Reverse Reissue Stratocaster is basically the Voodoo Strat without the Hendrix laser engraved neck plate.

Because these turned out to be "Limited Edition" guitars (not that they were necessarily intended to be when the range was released but that's how it turned out) and because they were high-end USA-made instruments they are rather highly sought after and near mint condition examples can go for upwards of US$3000 on Ebay. There's a '68 Reverse Reissue on Ebay right now, the seller describes it as being in relatively good nick that's listed for US$1999.

I'd say steer clear of the MIM 2000s models. The neck shape isn't the same, the fretboard radius is 7.25" and the frets aren't jumbo, the pickups aren't so good and they came with a cheap-ass single-ply pick guard. If you're really after a Voodoo Strat (or '68 Reverse Reissue) then be prepared to have to search and search, and when you find one, to pay a pretty penny for it. Also beware anyone trying to pass off a neck where there's the walnut-plugged truss rod hole on the headstock: no USA-made Voodoo or '68 Reverse Strats had this.

Any excuse to show off my Voodoo porn:

We've been following HWY's love affairs with his guitars for years now. Taking nothing away from Sebbers' collection, the one thing I love about HWY's is that he' got a LH neck on the guitar which throws the logo upside down. IMHO, that's the way Fender should have done all their versions of the guitar. Artistically, the logo just does not work placed so it can be read left to right on a reversed headstock.

Ahaha, proud to join the club  I've sort of become obsessed with finding one of these and I keep finding them reasonably priced only with a rosewood fretboard which I just cannot stand for some reason. Preferably black with maple. But then again I can't be picky...

If you like the concept, do what HWY1 did. Build your own using a LH solid maple neck with a large headstock.

I really do like the idea of doing something like that, just I don't know enough in general to do with building your own. Also I do like the thought of having a rare voodoo strat.

LOVE AFFAIR.......proper terminology.....I've finally found myself in a positive financial position where I can amass a collection that I adore!
I , however, cannot take credit for the happy upside down logo accident.
I bought the neck that way from STRATOSPHERE on E-Bay........just so happens it came like that.
