Looking around at locking tuners and I'm thinking a staggered set but which ones?
Doesn't look like Fender makes gold ones to match the hardware on my SRV artist series.

Kinda thinking that the HipShot set looks good.
There are also Sperzel that look promising.

Anyone have advice?

I recently got some from Gotoh that have the vintage look and like them a lot.

They come in locking with or without being staggered. Mine were the SD510 HAP-M (Height Adjustable Post & Magnum Locking) they have a lot of different style buttons and Machine Head styles for that matter.

You can't order directly from Gotoh. They have a less expensive set that's available from ebay sellers, but the SD510 style have to be ordered through a distributor. The North American distributor is JAParts and Josh Gemmel took very good care of me.

wow those are beauties.

I'm near sold. Love the styling of the covers.

thanks

did you have to modify the headstock at all? Like drill out the stock for different bushings, etc.?

Glad you liked them, nice solid 15 to 1 gear ratio and a mostly direct fit in the vintage 8mm peg holes. My set came with bushings to fit the larger modern 10mm holes and tiny "wraps" for the posts if the holes are slightly oversize.

On my Jimmie Vaughan neck the single screw "place" holes were already drilled and they were straight in line. That's more important than you might think at first, but a crooked tuner really sticks out.

I say mostly direct fit because I had to ream my peg holes out. Lacking the proper tool, a "Cello Peghole Reamer", I used Ceri's excellent advice and used sandpaper wrapped around a tapered paintbrush handle. You can see a full explanation in my old post here:
http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=87958

It takes a little elbow grease, but you get a nice round peg hole. The time before last that I had to fit a set of tuners I used a drill bit and "forced" the hole wider. Luckily I didn't crack my headstock.

Much appreciated. Especially the fotos. HiDef!
Machines arrived yesterday. Going in next few days.
The impromptu reaming tool is a great idea if I can't find a local luthier for a proper reaming. ( whaat?) Would hate to try direct drilling.
Looks like you have a pretty good stagger setup.
Would you mind perhaps listing your post heights as a rough start for my rig?

Hi, sorry for the slow reply, I was traveling yesterday. I know you're more than ready to install your tuners. Unless you're already strung up this will still work as the tuners adjust while installed but not strung.

I'm working from memory after a late night in Dallas.

My formula was pretty simple; the low E got the full height extension and the high E was the least possible height. I adjusted the rest on a plane with a 6" ruler as a straight edge.

It's been 3 months of playing and it all seems to work fine and I finally stopped using the stock string tree altogether.

Hope that helps.

- Dan

Sounds like a simple, good start.
Was surprising how the gear just dropped right in.
Well, bushings were kinda driven in a little bit. No reaming or mods necessary.
looking to string up this evening.
