Hey there! I'm sort of new to this whole world of vintage guitars. I learned everything I know from the internet and a book (Fender: The Golden Age 1946-1970). Anyway, I bought myself an all original 1975 Fender Stratocaster, supposedly all original and true to the year of manufacture.

I was just wondering whether this could be confirmed by any of you guys (who are much more guitar savvy than anyone I can get in touch with).

The serial number on the base of the neck is "0903-0352".
The serial number on the headstock is "PAT 3,143,028",
and there is also a stamp that says "J. TORRES" underneath the neck where it is screwed to the body.

This is probably all I can find on this guitar without really taking it to pieces (which I really don't want to do!).

I don't really know how to dig up info on this guitar without asking on forums like this one so any help will be massively appreciated!

That's not the serial number on the headstock, Joe. The serial number should be on the neck plate.

That neck code is right for a 1975.

We need pictures.

There are codes on the pots and the pickups too.

As you can probably tell, I don't know all that much about this stuff. I hope I've provided enough information!

I must say whatever happens I still love the guitar :)

Hi Joe,
JTorres is the name of the guy (John Torres) who worked on the neck. I don't know how long he worked there....quite some time as I recall.
the serial number is the number on the neckplate ....the chrome thingie ;O)
You may be able to get a closer date http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... uct-dating
Now that you got the picture thing down, there's probably some folks that can help you out more than I. Enjoy!
All the best,
rob

Yup, there's a serial number from about 1975!
What does it weigh?

HeyJoe42, yeah this guitar is just a pleasure to play :)

orvilleowner, I don't actually know I don't have any way of measuring that at the moment... From my experience I would be able to say that it is a pretty heavy guitar, heavier than my other strat and all the guitars I've had in the past. Pretty well balanced though and it isn't uncomfortably heavy.

Rob Schwarz-Fender, that's cool, thanks for that information!

Cheers for the help guys :)

The oldest Stratocaster I've ever played was a 1977 MINT all original Strat, I liked the sound I wanted it but the owner said it was worth 8k :D

That's crazy $$$ for that guitar… there are TONS of late 70's/early 80's Strats around, and many to be found in near mint condition. In perfect shape they might go for $2500-$3000 but even that seems like a stretch. Sounds like the owner just didn't want to let it go…

I've got a mint '81 Strat and I'd be stoked if it was worth half that!

Regarding the original post, the guitar sure seems legit to me and if you like it, that's really what matters. I don't think every CBS Strat is a dog and even though they are generally heavier in weight, a lot of them play and sound great… I love my '81. Congrats on the "new" guitar…

Can we see a full picture of it? :)

Yeah I look at 76s all the time because that's the first Strat my mom got me in 1980 for my 16th birthday.
I see them in excellent condition for around $2000 on ebay.
The edge was even selling one a while back but he wanted to much and it didn't sell.

I have Strat of similar vintage, just a little higher serial number, and it's the heaviest of mine. It weighs 9 lbs 1 oz, not as much as some are reported to weigh.

Mine weighs in at about 9 1/2 lbs… I'm not too bothered by the weight though, like yours, it's the heaviest of my strats (and maybe of all my guitars?) it's funny I read this post and went and dug it out to play it for a while… it's also one of the nicest sounding strats I have. There's just something about it- very quacky and able to get those really sharp clean tones. I love it! It's wiped down and back in it's coffin though… oddly, it's not one I play all the time. I think because I'm still nervous of putting a first ding on it. :)
