How many springs are you using? and are they on an angle or vertical?

a rookie question: wouldn't the strings tend to go flat if they are getting stuck in the nut after bending?
Yes, they would.

it instead be the tension from the springs on the tremolo bridge, such that the spring on the side of the G B E strings is pulling too hard?
See below.

He is using one spring. It's a Jazzmaster, not a Strat.

They go sharp open. I have the intonation and action set, so this is definitely a nut problem then?

Not necessarily. I suppose there might be a problem with your nut but if there was it wouldn't make your strings go sharp after bending. If anything they would go flat. I've been chewing on this off and on and there's gotta be something wonky in your trem. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about those trems. They are a whole nuther animal. I suggest you have your guitar looked at by a professional.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
