I bought a new Squier guitar equipped with a tremolo. It's a vintage modified jazzmaster, and I know this is the strat forum but the "other" section of the guitar forum is a graveyard. I rarely use the tremolo, but I do bend a lot. For some reason wen I hear a chord out of tune its always the G B E strings, either one or a combination of the three that are out of tune, while the E A D strings are still spot on in tune. I guess this question could really apply to any guitar so please don't get too mad that I posted this here. Thanks guys!

The culprit may be the nut, there may be friction between the nut slots and those strings. You may put fine shavings from pencil lead or vaseline so that the strings don't get caught in the slots.

You didn't say if the strings are going sharp or flat. You also didn't say how new your strings are. Strings will stretch for the first little while. The question of how stretched out they are bears on the issue. Many of us pre-stretch our strings as soon as they are installed to remove any future stretching. There are a couple of methods of pre-stretching. Bear in mind also that bending strings involves your tremolo even if you don't touch the whammy bar. The trem moves when you bend unless you have the trem blocked or locked. More info is needed here in order to assess possible causes of your problem.

The treble strings are consistently going sharp. The strings are about two weeks old.

Does it happen when the trem is locked? Jaguars and Jazzmasters have locking features.

Since it is a Squier, it has a low budget non-locking tremolo.

Low-budget quality = low-budget performance.

Why not ditch that POS and treat yourself to a real Fender?

I ran a little waxed dental floss through the E,B,G nut slots, it fixed the problem. When you have the money buy an American Strat.

I already have two American special strats. I want a Jazz, but I want a maple 22 fret board and Fender refuses to make a 22 fret jazz while doing so for literally every other model. I want one I can get the feel of before ordering a classic player body and a custom neck, most likely from warmoth.

Replacement Trem
Not sure if it is an exact fit but it might be worth looking into.

DO they go sharp when they are open or does it just happen when you fret?

Sounds like your in need of a good setup to fix your issue. If you can do it yourself so much the better, however, a real professional is recommended the first time out.

They go sharp open. I have the intonation and action set, so this is definitely a nut problem then?

a rookie question: wouldn't the strings tend to go flat if they are getting stuck in the nut after bending?

Could it instead be the tension from the springs on the tremolo bridge, such that the spring on the side of the G B E strings is pulling too hard?
