Hi there,

Im a big fan of the Squier Strat and Tele Classic Vibe series of guitars (beautifully made for squiers and they have some lovely alnico 3/5 pickups in them). Now a Simon Neil (from Biffy Clyro) classic vibe fiesta red with mint green scratch plate new is approx 300 pounds stirling, maybe 480 dollars?
Anyway, i've been offered one of these that was won in a competition between fender and the band. So it's signed by the 3 band members, and it's a custom designed Simon Neil signature model (it's not differen to the normal simon neil signature but the model itself is customised being a sig). i can get it for about 600 dollars. do you think it's worth the investment? the guy has all the emails from fender etc saying about the competition and that he won it

I'd say no, that's too much for a Squier, no matter who signed it.

They're $350 and under at most stores here in the colonies.

Unless the guitar has a direct connection to the artist, signatures don't really add much value to anything.

Would be different if the artist gigged with it or if it was actually his guitar.. Even so, the connection would need evidence :)

You reckon a silk-screened signature decal is worth two hundred bucks?

If not then here you go, sport......

If it's a work-a-day guitar, forget about paying a premium for a celebrity signature.

Once you're done with it, it will be viewed as 'used' and value will be commensurate with wear. The sig may help it move more quickly, but not at a premium price to the gen'l. market.

A celebrity signature is only good for a guitar you put away un-played and later sell in pristine condition, with proof of provenance (a decal don't count).

And... Squiers are never gonna appreciate beyond their 'real' Fender counterparts.

A John5 Squier bears no resemblance to the actual guitar John5 plays. That Squier, I can assure you, competes with a Custom Shop on all levels.

He's merely an endorsee which Fender pays to place his name on it, in order to draw you in.

cheers!

just to be clear. the guitar itself is a signature model it's got the decal of the guys signature on the headstock, and it's customized like his real relic strat. so it's a signature model.

but ONTOP of that, the 3 member's of the band have personally signed the guitar all over the body (with real pens and everything :P ). and Simon Neil himself wrote a slogan on the guitar (they have a song called Wave upon Wave upon Wave), and with his signature he wrote "Riff upon Riff upon Riff, keep on rockin'".

if you get me. so it's not just the fact that it's his sig model, it's the fact that it was a competition one that was personally signed etc.

Clearly you think it has greater value than most of us responding.

Only 1 way to find out.

Buy it, store it for 20 years, and then see what the Market values it at.

Even if it sells at a 'profit', you need to weigh that against Lost Opportunity Cost (ie. Interest that same money would have earned if invested) to determine whether you're ahead or not.

It is pure speculation.

But for it to be an investment, you can't play it or gig it because you can't risk ruining your investment.

If you want it, buy it. You don't need justification from the crowd to do that.

cheers!

thanks for the reply. basically im being charged 150 dollars extra (maybe slightly over that) for the 3 signatures. i see your point. also it's surprisingly well made and getting amazing reviews (the whole series is, classic vibe). but i think the Squier thing just ruins it :\z

The first time I remember seeing signed guitars (not played and owned by the musician) was many, many years ago in a shop in Aspen, Co. They had about a dozen Squiers signed by top artists and asking many times the price of the guitar. I just can't see it. Go on eBay and buy something autographed for $5 and then go get a nicer guitar.
