My uncle wants to sell his old Strat, unfortunately we do not know the model :?

The only information we have is...
- Built between 1981 and 1983, most probably in 1982

Woah!! That guitar is a beautiful example of the model known as "The Strat"

It was first introduced to the industry in June 1980. It listed for $995. Has a four bolt neck and vintage-style truss rod adjustment, X-1 bridge pickup, wiring circuit delivering 9 basic sounds, [one of the knobs being a rotary mode selector offering pickup settings in series or parallel]gold hardware, and an a redesigned, extra massive bridge and vibrato block.

IMHO, if you are a player I would not let that guitar out of the family. Keep it!!

Walnut Strat, I think. Here's a link to one, that might give some info.

It was only in production for 3 years. Sellers on eBay are asking between $1500 and $5000 for this guitar. I would contact Mandolin Bros on Staten Island, NY, or Gruhn's Guitars and see if you can ball park a value if he's hell bent on selling and then buy it from him. This is one of those 'in the attic'/'under the bed for 30 years' finds you read about. It ought to stay in the family if at all possible.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll submit it to my uncle...

There is only one downer. The guitar has been modifed in the course of time ...
At the third picture, you can see right below a retrofitted XLR connector :(

Update:
Here is a picture of the modification nightmare

I think he should gild the XLR connector and improve the edge... If he still wants to sell this "Strat" :?
What do you think? How much the value is reduced by the XLR?

Wow - you just don't see many of those around at all. I don't think I've ever come across a "The Walnut Strat" in person; just maybe 5-6 of the regular "The Strat"s. The Fender dealer at the time these first came out in 1980 had gotten in a "lake placid" blue one, and once it sold they got in a candy apple red one. In the ensuing 30 years I've stumbled upon maybe 4 used ones but again always a blue or red one. Never a Walnut one.

Like ZZ Doc says - The Strat went into production about mid-1980, but that was only the painted ones. "The Walnut Strat" came out in 1981. They probably finished production in early 1983 - it seems like there was some overlap as Fender cleared out all the old models except the USA Reissues and brought in the "Standard" (the 2-knob Strat/top loader Tele) and Elite models. They did wind up doing a "Walnut Elite" that was kind of the replacement for this model.

Well, it's no longer stock so that might take some of the blush off the rose. I wouldn't mess with it any further Leave it as is. You can't see it. Provide a full description of the guitar, with photos, and get the quotes.

That is an authentic walnut "Strat" Stratocaster, about as rare as rocking horse droppings. I wouldn't attempt to reverse the XLR mod, with a guitar like this it's a genuine bit of early 1980's quirkiness and any repair is probably going to do more harm than good. As a general rule I'd say don't do a repair that risks doing further damage to the guitar.

Those early 1980s Strats (and "Strats") were the ones that really fired my love of all things Fender and you have one of the rarest models there. Even with the ugly XLR mod it's a valuable instrument that any collector would kill to own.

Interesting to see Dan Armstrong was involved in the R&D. The series/parallel switching is typical Armstrong, kind of a progenitor of the S1 switch.

Dat's a beauty!!!
Edit: Ahh NOT David Maddux's stamp (FRR42)....Kent Smith (FRR16) was the inspector.
And it was inspected.......right there in the booth behind Freddie Tavares (striped shirt/glasses)

Too bad about the xlr....but still a beautiful "Strat".

All the best,
rob

I shot an email to Vintage Guitar this morning. Hopefully, they'll respond. If I don't hear in 24, I'll give it an encore. In the interim, based upon what John C has written, [and you can take his stuff to the bank] most definitely put yourself in line for that geetar.

I always thought the maple skunk stripe on these instruments was just the unltimate touch of beautifully understated class.
