Ok I've got a dumb question, I was given a free Samick Stratocaster from a buddy who was moving and I don't like the color on the body. Im looking for a route to take with custom artwork on the body. So my question is, is there a certain utensil (sharpie, spray paint, etc...) that works better than the other. I just wanna alter it so it doesnt look like another solid color strat.

that looks helpful but I'm looking for a easier way to go about it as in going to an arts and crafts store or just getting a couple rattle cans and some primer. I'm really lookin for a minimal money job, just somthing quick and easy

Hi backdoorman9178: then get yourself down to your local car parts store and pick up some automotive paint in aerosols.

And you don't even need primer: so long as you give the body a good sanding all over with something around a P300 wet-and-dry paper you will create an adequate key for the new finish and the old paint can act as your primer/levelling layer.

It ain't necessarily the route to a top line professional looking job, but it can come out quite nicely if you work carefully. That's more about effort and skill than cost.

Good luck - C

No probs! Good luck with it.

Come back to this thread and post us a photo of how it turned out if you feel like it. Be fun to see what you come up with.

Cheers - C

+1 !

But, have to say more clearly that your results will be in direct proportion to your effort, especially prep.

Be sure to vacuum the body thoroughly after sanding (keying) and also wipe with a tack cloth after that to remove any trace of dust which will cause blisters and 'Fisheyes' in the finish.

Be sure to vacuum your spraying area thoroughly and wipe with a wet rag beforehand to trap any dust and prevent it being kicked up by the spray can's propellant.

Several light coats are better than fewer heavy coats and will minimize the possibility of runs in the paint.

Allow to dry away from drafts which can also carry dust and deposit it on the finish.

Follow-up with a wet-sand (color sanding) starting w/ 1500 grit and proceed up to 3000 grit. Then use a heavy cut polish, followed by medium and fine cuts to remove any 'orange peel'. Finally, buff to a luster and wax.

If you do all this, and take your time, you can arrive at a professional looking finish for little money.

The trade off will be elbow grease, but also a lot of pride in your finished piece.

cheers!

We'll see what happens. I'm in now way a professional at this but I'm mechanically inclined and should be able to transfer my skills from auto body work to guitar body work. Plus its time for a winter project lol thank you for the adivce hopefully it comes out half decent.

Hi again backdoorman: ah, well if you know auto body work then this is a stroll in the park for you. Back in the day guitar paint and car paint were the same thing. Usually these days they're different formulations, but the principles are exactly the same.

If you can respray a car then you can respray a guitar! :D

I don't think I'll wish you luck again - it doesn't sound like you need it! Go to. 8)

Cheers - C

Let's copy a photo of Smokin's guitar over here, for ease of viewing:

For pennies he did a great job, didn't he? It's got a Jimi vibe without being a direct rip-off. Neat! :)

And of course, if he ever finds he's had enough of it, a quick wipe over with methylated spirits/denatured alcohol will take it straight off and he can do something else. Eat your heart out, Guitar Facelift!

A friend of mine had a Fernandez Strat copy and hated the robin's egg colour. We stripped the guitar apart and sanded the finish down to the primer and he took it to a body shop and had it painted for $80. When painted by someone who knows how to paint it can turn out beautiful. He chose a very rich metal flake royal blue with red and green pearl coats which the guy had already mixed up for a custom hotrod he had in the shop. It looked fabulous.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
