Hey, everyone, new member here. I've played Gibson styled guitars for over 30 years. Les Paul copies when I first started, a beautiful Gibson ES-335 that I bought off my uncle when I was 17, but later had to sell back, and finally, a Les Paul studio model, which I played exclusively since the late 90's. I owned a '62 Fender Telecaster re-issue, a Gretsch, and a Rickenbacker, but I rarely played anything much except the Gibson I had. I just love the feel and sound of them, and will never give my Les Paul up.

However, early this year I bought a really expensive Telecaster and fell in love with it. I want to get a second cheaper one to tune in open G with the E string removed to play my Stones stuff on so I can keep the other one in standard tuning and get the most out of it.

This has sparked my interest in a strat. Never had one. Never really liked the looks of one compared to all the other guitars I've mentioned. However, part of me really feels like I have missed out on something special. How many of my guitar heroes made the strat their guitar of choice? Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Van Halen (at one time), Gilmour, Beck, Blackmore, Harrison, and Eric Johnson, just to name some off the top of my head. I saw the light that there has to be a reason. I have my eye on this expensive baby!

Can some of you strat players sell me on why the strat is something that the best guitarists, in general, prefer over the rest?

Nothing wrong with a Gibson. I have a 335 that is one sweet guitar. Strats to my ears have so much character in their tone . Its one of the most versatile guitars I have ever played. 5 different positions and I really like the "in between " position s. Very comfortable to play too . To me the Strat takes a bit more finesse to play , but well worth the effort. Both of my strats are ash bodies too, Love them.

You can't go wrong with strat ..
Having both, or all 3 is even better

A Stratocaster is one of the finest creations in the world its really the perfect designed guitar.
Even the finest Gibson players have a Strat in their collection.
I will always have one of each, most times two :)

I am totally the opposite. I am a long time Fender player and I am gassing BIG TIME for a Les Paul. I never liked the necks too much before, but recently I have spent a little time with a couple of Gibsons and hopefully by this time next year I will be posting a pic of a new Les Paul!

I own one strat, and that is almost by chance.

before I brought it I had 3 teles, I was fender tele through and through, nothing else electric interested me. the shape and commonality of a strat put me off, everybody had them.

then one day, while waiting for a mate who was trying out a highway 1 tele, I picked up a MIM 'satin strat', a standard Mexican strat with a satin type of finish only done for a year (though recently it was revived again).

the colour and feel of the finish (like Teflon) was the only reason I picked it up. 20 minutes later I was walking out of the door with it, it was like butter and just felt so right, regardless of for years being adamant they didn't interest me. I cant even remember thinking about the tone of it, I was so blown away by how comfy it was and how 'right' it felt to play. I probably would have brought it even if it sounded crap.

its still the only one I own, but im very open to more now hahahaha.

Simply put, it is perhaps the most versatile guitar you can have in your collection. It's hard to beat the clarity of single coils and the 5-way switch gives you a wide palette of tones to utilize. The guitarists you've named span various genres, thus a testament to the tonal offerings of a strat. You may or may not end up liking your strat more than your Gibsons, but it's always fun to have more tools in the shed.

Every serious guitar player needs one of each. But if you've been playing Gibson style guitars your whole life, you may find the ergonomics of a Strat takes some getting used to. I played a Guild Starfire my whole life, which is similar to an ES335. After I bought my Strat I found the controls too close. My palm didn't sit well on the bridge. My normal strumming position was right over the center pup, which meant I'd hit the bottom of the pup with my pick. I kept hitting the 5 way switch as I strummed. It's taken me a bit of effort to get used to playing a Strat, but I find it's worth the effort as there's times my LP just doesn't sound right for the song and the Strat does. As time goes by I'm getting more used to the placement of the controls and I don't smack the selector switch too often anymore.

One of the previous commenters already touched on the fact that the PU selector is easy to hit when you strum. I still have that problem. Another thing is that the height of the pole pieces is not adjustable and I wish they were.

I am not familiar with the Gibson's but the Strat has fantastic highs and deep lows and the selector switch allows you to mix and match any two PuPs for any sound. The action on them is very close to the theretical minimum. Also, the MIMs are ok for a second gt. .

That call was heard by many other innovators and artists like Hendrix, Beck, Clapton, Wood, Richards, Gilmour and many more who also play Gibbys and other guits.

I totally agree… I love my Les Paul Special, those P90s are to die for but it's not a guitar I always want to play. Same with my SGs and my L6-S, I love 'em but I don't play them every day. I always come back to the Strats… they are my daily players. I can't put my finger on any one thing that makes them "better", and that's totally subjective to begin with. I guess I like the variety of tones, as others have mentioned. The 5 from the factory (as is the case with most starts) are great, and if you add a humbucker in the bridge and add a few toggles, you can cover a lot of ground. They're easy to work on and their modular nature makes repairs easier and relatively inexpensive, especially if you do them yourself. A Strat is like a blank canvas… if you want a vintage sounding one you can have it. Want a hardtail or Floyd Rose, you can have it… single coils, humbuckers, maple neck, rosewood board, alder, ash, mahogany, the options and possibilities are infinite and yet it somehow they all have this vibe that makes each one as familiar as the next (IMO).

I've pretty much given up on factory models as you can build one to your own specs easily from parts… it's like making your own custom shop guitar. I do get excited by new models (and inspired to try new wiring schemes) but to me, the only thing that gets me really excited are new color offerings… the rest I can more or less do myself.

That's enough ranting from me… simply put, I love 'em. 8)
