Can a guy buy a letter? I am missing the "r" in Stratocaster on the headstock of my 98 American Deluxe. It's a silver raised letter, on top of the clear coat I think. This is needed for an authentic DN8 (of course the serial number is under clear) Fender Stratocaster. I would gladly send pictures to prove authenticity....just to get the proper letter for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Found this on Fender website

How to obtain a replacement decal:

1.To help us achieve the best match of available decals, take at least 4 clear photographs of your instrument, (the entire front, entire back of the instrument and a close-up of the front and back of the headstock). This will help us verify that it is indeed a genuine Fender product in need of a replacement decal, (if the instrument has the serial number stamped into the neck plate, please include a pencil "rubbing" from the neck plate showing this number).
2.Next, take the photos along with your guitar to the nearest Authorized Fender Service Center, where they will evaluate the instrument.

3.After comparing the instrument with the photos, they will then mail the photos and neck plate rubbing to our Product Support team in Scottsdale.

4.Once we receive the photographs, we will try to find the most accurate decal for that instrument.

5.We will then send the appropriate decal to the Authorized Service Center.
Note: Decal availability is limited to certain models, and while Fender does not charge a fee for a replacement decal, the Fender Authorized Service Center may charge a fee for providing this service to you.

Thanks. That answers my question and I can pursue jumping through the hoops to get the letter.

Fender is obviously seeking way to intercede in the 'chop shop' market for Fender parts and the violation of laws protecting its trademark. They've returned to making bodies and necks available, and I am pleased to see that they are attempting to be of assistance when it comes to logo art in that the 'after market' is rife with transfers. We had an awfully hot and contested thread on subject of patent and trademark abuses about 3 years ago. Let us know how things turn out for you.

I think you can only buy a vowel.
Don't they just give you R, S, T, L, N and E?

my recollection is that most modern necks have the decal Under the finish with the exception of the Vintage or Nitro finished models (in general).
But yeh, ya gotta jump through a few hoops so that we don't worry about feeding the "fake" market.

Cheers,
rob

Thanks for the help everyone, I am just glad to hear I should be able to get the matching letter. I can definitely see the point of Fender asking for proof of authenticity, so a few hoops is no big deal.

Much appreciated, riptooth

Haha! Best response I've read here in a long time.

I'd be surprised if you got just a single letter. Let us know how it goes.

Rob - dusting off the old memory banks here, but I think that the first runs of the American Deluxes in 1998 had the foil decal over the finish. I had one of the very early ones (bought it in May 1998) and I remember feeling the decal over the finish. Because it was easy to rub off letters you started putting it under the finish some time during the last half of 1998.

To be honest (and I am ...woefully sometimes lol) I go with your memory John. Easier to reapply for riptooth then, so all the better!
