I have a '98 Strat deluxe that I want to fill the "swimming pool" routering to just fit the 3 single pups. As a handy woodworking guy, I am trying to decide what kind of wood to fill the open sections in the body cavity. Yes,I have heard that it does not effect the tone of the guitar, but certain woods might a bit. If I end up with something that sounds a little different, that jut makes it mine. I have 3 excellent options for the filler wood:

1). 100 yr old quarter sawn Maple

2) Tennessee Black Walnut, cut into planks in the 50s

3). Some Western Red Cedar, from about the 50s (maybe 60s) too.

Any thoughts about this from thou that are wiser than I ? I can make the pieces quartersawn or not for all of the woods, could this be a factor?

Why not just pick up a new, pre-painted body and save yourself the hassle?

Fender now offers these major components or you can find less-expensive furniture from Allparts, WD, or Mighty Mite.

Thx Arjay, but I want to maintain some originality to the instrument. Any piece I add will be removable of course, I won't be removing any material from the body at all.

I'm not qualified to offer an opinion on which wood might work best but I'd certainly be interested to know what kind of difference you hear after you do it. Keep us posted!

As you stated the pieces of wood will be removeable, why not try all 3 , one at a time , just reconnect your pickguard and string up each time, try it for a day and see (if there is any tonal difference), which you prefer

If it's removable, how will it benefit at all?

I guess I have too much time on my hands, working up north away from home. Anyways, thanks for more replies. I probably will try all 3 types of wood, especially if there is no change with the soft, light cedar I will try first. The pieces will be glued into place, no permanent anchors like screws or nails. With some care in fitting the pieces, it will act as a solid mass, but they can easily be knocked out with a hammer blow. I am a skilled carpenter and craftsman, that knows all 3 of these types of wood can be considered tone woods. I suspect the resonance of the body will change slightly by filling the areas between pickups. You never know till you try right?

That's my question. How is the OP going to attach this? Or is it removable via chisel?

Yes I may have to chisel out the pieces after they are glued in, but I suspect a sharp hammer blow will knock them out. When glued, they will resonate with the Alder wood the body is constructed of.

Now that's what I call "maintaining some originality to the instrument".

Chisel and hammer, huh?

By the time you finish that clusterfuck you'll wish you'd just set the original body aside and instead found a suitable replacement.

Lmao, that cracked me up! Told you I was bored with nothing better to do. I think I better find something else to make to amuse me. I still haven't decided if I am going to do anything with the pool yet. I was thinking this thread may have caught the eye of some luthiers, players, or aspiring luthier like me. See what input other people have about tone woods, resonance and whether wood mass is better than being "chambered" like a lot of new guitars now.

I've never heard of any one filling in the swimming pool route. It is an interesting idea.
You would have to lightly route the cavity to remove the finish and square it up, right?
Would you put in a solid plug and then route out the single pickup cavities?

If you do it, be sure to take loads of pictures.

I do like your way of thinking orvilleowner, thanks. I was thinking just 2 dividing blocks between the 3 single pups. It a fist year American Deluxe, I really don't want to mess with it to much. I do want to keep this simple and don't expect "life altering" changes for the guitar. Articles and opinions I see on the net show that knowledgeable people figure this may or may not make a difference at all.
