Hey all!
I've been offered this guitar in a trade and I've never seen this color on a Strat. The owner says it's a 2009 American Standard Limited Edition. I'm trying to get the serial number so I can check it with Fender. Has anyone seen this before or could it be a fake?
Here are some pics:

What looks to be a mix of American/Mexican/and after market parts. A parts-o-caster.

It's very nice looking.

Thanks for your input Paris. Which part(s) do you feel are MIM?

Just putting in my $0.02 - the neck is definitely not a USA; you can tell by the black plastic truss rod plug. The trem might be MIM; I really don't think there are any parts normally found on a USA Strat other than the locking tuners. The neck plate is a fake - Fender doesn't do that engraving "Fender Corona California" engraving on any neck plates that don't also have the hole for the micro-tilt mechanism and this neck plate does not have the hole.

It appears there is no serial number - at least I'm not seeing one.

Thanks JohnC!
I've had my doubts from the beginning on this one...

I've also been offered this guitar (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/ms ... 37381.html)

Seems legit and is probably a better deal. Your thoughts?

Possible the neck, but I can't tell very well. I know that it is not American (it would be walnut). Is the truss rod whole made of black plastic?

If you measure the bridge saddle wholes, you can figure out if the bridge is MIM or AM. MIM bridges have closer saddles than the American ones. Do you own this guitar? If so, open it up. Check out the pickups and body routes.

The neck plate and tuners look American.

I'm pretty convinced that the body is after market. I'd have to see the contours (from the side). I love the color. How does it sound and play?

Looking at the headstock logo, I think it says, Make is U.S.A. under the Fender logo. If that is the case, then I'm thinking that the neck is aftermarket too. In fact, where is the sereal number on the back of the headstock.

I'm not buying that this is American made. I'm saying, "Fake." The only parts on this guitar which appear ligit to me (from the photos) are the tuning keys and neck plate, both of which can be purchased after market.

I have nothing against parts-o-casters. I own two of them and love them, but I do have an issue with people trying to pass off p-o-csters as ligit Fender.

By the way, what does the seller want to trade you for?

Paris - I have a 18w head with a 1x12 cabinet I am selling/trading. I have another guy offering a '88 Inca Silver Strat that looks more legit. I think I posted a link above...I think I will look into that one instead. Thanks for your insight and advice!

Yes. This is a late '80s American Std. This was the new owners at Fender trying to get the Strat back in shape. The Strats, prior to the buy out, were very different than the Strats of Yor. The body conours had gotten pretty bad, the pickups were hit or more and the quality controls were out the window. The American Std. Strat changed all of that.

The "E" sereal numbers were left over from before the sale.

These are good guitars. I owned an '87 Strat Plus, the model just above this one in price point and built around the same time as the guitar in the ad. The only differnce between this guitar and the Strat Plus were the tuning keys, Wilkinson roller nut and Fender Gold Lace Sensors.

I hope this helps. Let me know how this all works out for you. By the way, what are you trying to do? What are you looking for? What are you trading and why?

I know; it's a lot of questions, but you havve my attention.

Good catch! I didn't see that. The neck plate is a fake, JC. To quote Star Wars, "I've got a bad feeling about this."

By the way, the Telecaster I'm playing in my profile photo: Parts-o-caster I had built from Fender and non-Fender parts. I always liked the way Andy Summers' Telecaster looked and sounded, so I built my own similar to his. It's currently my favorite guitar.

JohnC - I am currently selling/trading a 18w tube head with a 1x12 cab that I got as payment for building a website (uglyamps.com). The amp is a bit too much for me and I can't part with my '79 MusicMan! So I thought I would try to sell it or trade for a decent USA Strat since all my current Fender guitars are MIM (which I love, don't get me wrong). I got two trade offers this week, one the FAKE and the other the '88.

Paris that looks like a nice Tele. Do you have the '72 Custom pickup config? HB Neck and SC Bridge? I really like the sunburst with the binding too!

Sorry, the link in the PM didn't work but the link here in the forum post did.

Yes - the one on craigslist is a legit 1988 Strat; no problems with that one as paris said.

I sometimes have connectivity issues with this forum depending on where I'm posting from.

No worries. Thanks to you and Paris for all of the info. I'll have to post pics of the '88 if I make the trade :D
