The later version Big Apple Strat was also supposedly the first Strat to come stock with HH configuration as a regular run.

...sporting a pair of snarling Seymour Duncan humbuckers: Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge and '59 in the neck.

This guitar would become the American Double Fat Strat in 2000. Discontinued in 2002 and replaced by the S1-equipped American Strat HH the following year.

It was also hardtail....

Man, FMIC's had more models than ZaZa's had husbands.

Sadly Fender no longer offers the hardtail option on many of their models.

If you want a hardtailed Strat you must choose between the Cray Standards and the more expensive Cray Customs.

The original whammy was replaced by an EasyMute system.

Anything new on the reference to the name?

I was thinking that Fender also had California Strats, Lonestar Strats, and maybe a regional reference for NY?

I believe the California Series was assembled in Mexico from MIA parts or something along those lines.

YEP, TRUE!

The series included a Fat Telecaster with a chrome humbucker in the neck among others.
