With the Garageband app you can import songs and play along with them. Are you running iOS 7?

My travel rig is Line6 Mobile-In adapter using Mobile POD. Tons of amps, cabs, and effects... no "Buy More" stuff.

I have Amplitube (adapter, FULL version app, and most of the add ons)... Mobile POD smokes it.

Most of the 30 pin adapters let you use any of the other apps available for iphone/ipad.

I'm tossing around getting an iRig (not iRig Pro).
Can you record with it? Are there limitations?

One up on the iRig with AmpliTube Free and the Fender app.

You should be able to do anything you like with it. It feeds the guitar into the phone or iPad and feeds the processed signal back into a mini jack port (headphones). You can plug that into a desk, recorder or whatever and record it.

As for in-app recording. I believe the free apps have one channel recording. The paid apps allow four tracks.

My experience with iRig was that when using the hi-gain sims, there was a lot of squealing and static noise - not so with the Apogee Jam.

There's a lot of other new options out now (just in time for NAMM).

I use a Boss Tu-88 tuner - it has a headphone amp built-in.

Just returned from shredding my fingers. Neck and middle pickups selected. Plugged my guitar into the iRig, set the gain in AmpliTube on the iPhone at 4.1 to get a mild distortion and strummed away. Dm, Dm with the top E pressed at the third fret (dunno the name of that chord), E, A, D. Repeated it countless times, hitting various strings. Sometimes emphasising the bass strings, then sounding out the treble ones. It created a nice Velvet Underground / grunge drone. Loved it.

This, while my family sleeps.

There may be better rigs out there and I may be an absolute crap guitarist, but damn, did I enjoy it! And that's the point of the whole thing. Joy.

Whatever stuff you buy, make sure it gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
